Bellator announces welterweight tournament bouts for Season 4 premiere

Though the field of Season 4 participants had long been set for Bellator Fighting Championships’ upcoming welterweight tournament the official breakdown of brackets remained shrouded in mystery. However, Bellator brought the quarterfinal round into the light earlier today, as the promotion announced a quartet of 170-pound pairings slated for Season 4’s March 5 debut at the Tachi Palace and Casino in Lemoore, California.

According to Bellator, newly signed UFC/Strikeforce veteran Jay Hieron will face 14-2 Steve Carl, while clash between talented Judokas will highlight the tournament’s opening bout earlier in the evening with Brit “Judo” Jim Wallhead taking on undefeated Olympian Rick Hawn.

Also matched-up at the event, Brent Weedman will attempt to avenge a 2006 loss to Dan Hornbuckle and former champ Lyman Good will take on hard-hitting Chris Lozano.

“This welterweight tournament is stacked. Every fight should be hyper-competitive” said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Any one of these eight fighters could win it, make $100,000, and earn the right to fight Ben Askren for our world title.”

Fans can tune in to see Bellator 35, as well as all of the Season 4 action, live on MTV2.
