Josh Thomson vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri booked for Japan on New Year’s Eve

Former Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson will look to extend his current win streak to three in a row this New Year’s Eve when he faces popular Japanese competitor Tatsuya Kawajiri on the annual “Dynamite!!” card being held at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The 18-3 Thomson most-recently saw action this past October when he beat American Top Team’s Gesias “J.Z.” Cavalcante at “Strikeforce – Diaz vs. Nons 2” by way of a hard-fought unanimous decision.

News of the cross-promotional bout was first reported by MMAFighting.

Including his match-up with Cavalcante, Thomson has emerged victorious in ten of his last eleven bouts with the lone exception being a five-round decision loss to “Top 3” lightweight and current Strikeforce title-holder Gilbert Melendez (a man he’s also beaten). “The Punk” has finished thirteen of the eighteen opponents he’s beaten while only having been stopped a single time in his twenty-one fight career.

Kawajiri (26-6-2) will be returning to the ring for the first time since suffering a cringe-worthy Achilles Lock to Shinya Aoki at DREAM 15 last July. Prior to the submission, “Crusher” had won four consecutive fights as well as seven of the nine before starting the run of straight success.

This should be an entertaining fight.

  • MMA-LOGIC says:

This is stupid. These guys should both be under exclusive contracts and not be allowed to fight each other. I absolutely hate it when 2 top class fighters from different orgs are allowed to fight. Sure this will be a great fight but … err … co-pro doesn’t work… well sometimes it doesn’t …like when …um…it just doesn’t OK and .. um …it would be better if … damn it, fans should not be allowed to see great fights like this. We should have to all just take it on faith that the most promoted fighters are the best.
Whats next? Alvarez vs Melendez or Lombard vs Souza? God I hope those great match ups never happen. It reminds me of those dark, dark times when Fedor and Randy were going to fight. Thank god exclusive contracts stopped that abomination from taking place.

Very well said Logic. I am really looking forward to this years MMA shows and this fight should be one of the best, I just hope Josh had plenty of time to get ready for it.
