UFC 122 ran into an unforeseen speed-bump this evening when it was announced Alessio Sakara would be withdrawing from his co-headlining match-up with Jorge Rivera due to a yet-to-be-diagnosed illness. As a result, the bout between lightweights Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Nick Osipczak has been bumped up to the main card.
Sakara, who is currently riding a three-fight win streak, was set to compete on the biggest stage of his career in Germany before experiencing nausea/flu-like symptoms during the lead-up to the event and throughout the preliminary portion of the show. However, though the unexpected change is certainly unfortunate, the replacement pairing is ripe with potential.
Osipczak started his MMA career off with five straight victories, including two in the Octagon, before dropping back-to-back decisions in his last two bouts. Comparably, Ludwig is a veteran of thirty fights and has taken on some of the MMA’s best in the cage including Takanori Gomi, Josh Thomson, Tyson Griffin, Paul Daley, and BJ Penn. He holds wins in his career over Yves Edwards, Jens Pulver, and Genki Sudo.
