Tim Sylvia ready to exchange leather with Paul Buentello at “War on the Mainland”

It’s often said we fall so we learn how to get back up; that what does not kill us only makes us stronger. While history has produced countless ways of delivering a similar message about dealing with adversity, there may not be any Mixed Martial Artist who currently personifies its struggle from a professional standpoint better than former two-time UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia.

Sylvia, who has felt the highs of headlining huge events to the lows of being knocked out by a 48-year old man making his professional MMA debut, has won back-to-back fights since losing to Ray Mercer a year ago and looks to continue the righting of his career this Saturday night against 28-12 journeyman Paul Buentello. The two men, both known for their striking, will scrap for Powerhouse World Promotion’s heavyweight title at the company’s “War on the Mainland” show in Irvine, California.

Five Ounces of Pain recently had a chance to ask “The Maine-iac” for his basic thoughts on Buentello and the bout in general. Sylvia’s level of respect for the powerful Texan was clear and understandably so given Buentello seventeen career TKOs and history of leaving it all in the cage whenever he competes.

“I think Paul is a good guy and a great fighter,” said Sylvia. “I think it’s going to be a great fight and the fans are going to love it – two stand-up guys that want to knockout someone.”

“War on the Mainland” takes place at the Bren Events Center on Saturday, August 14th, and will be available on cable/satellite PPV starting at 7:00PT/10:00ET. Beyond Sylvia and Buentello championship clash, the card also features title fights between UFC alumnus Jason Lambert and eight-time World BJJ champion Allan Goes for the light heavyweight belt, as well as former IFL 185-pound champ Matt Horwich facing submission-specialist Thales Leites for the middleweight strap. Additionally, former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver and hard-hitting veteran Terry Martin are slated for action at the show.

If Tim can “fight tall” and use his reach, he should be able to win this with either a late TKO or a decision. But if Buentello can get inside early and use those nasty uppercuts he could drop Tim and get the W.

Tim has been looking better with his striking lately though, so I think he’ll manage to keep Buentello at bay and walk away with a win here.

I’m pulling for Pulver here simply because he’s one of those crazy bastards from the old days that gets in there and just flat out fights. Doesn’t matter who he’s going against, you know he wants to smash his fist into their head and he’s willing to take some abuse to get it done. But if he loses and I have to watch him cry through another “I love the fans, but this might be my last fight” speech, I’m gonna hurl.

I always liked watching Tim fight and am hoping he can get the W in this one as well. Nothing against Paul, but I think Sylvia has the capacity to be relevant in MMA still. He was always one of the toughest fighters (still punching after Mir snaped his arm), and I think he could hang with top guys in Strikeforce if he can get back in shape and fighting form.
It’s also good to see someone hire Pulver again. I hope he can get back in the win column as well, he’s not a fan favorite for nothing.

This will be a pretty fun fight to watch I think, and a exciting win here will get Tim Firmly back on the radar from SF and maybe even the UFC. A boring 3 round decision or a loss to Paul puts him way way back. I think this is Tims fight to lose though as he is for sure the more well rounded MMA fighter here.
I am with you MCM, very happy to see Pulver get a fight.

I hope they legalize mma in NYC next year, I can see the possibility of local/ regional cards monthly, theres so many investors and entrepreneur’s walking around with money to invest I wouldn’t be surprised if monthly they could get cards together like the one above without a problem…

    Go Pulver
    Go Buentello
