“Strikeforce: Houston” official for the Toyota Center on August 21

While a Strikeforce event in Houston has been on the forecast for some time now, the promotion had yet to make the card official, until today.

Strikeforce recently revealed that “Strikeforce: Houston” will in fact take place from the Toyota Center in Texas on August 21. recently first revealed that the card would be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, while bouts including Sergei Kharitonov vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, Tim Kennedy vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, and K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Gurgel are also looking likely for the event.

A press conference formally announcing the card is slated for July 13.

Pre-sale for tickets to the event will go on sale the day of the press conference, July 13, while ticket sales will become available to the general public on July 16.

“Strikeforce: Houston” is set to broadcast live on Showtime.

  • Rece Rock says:

Looks like a decent card… Cavalcante gets the TKO and the belt…

  • Dufresne says:

Sergei is a pretty solid opponent for anyone, his fight with Bigfoot has pretty good potential.

Cavalcante is a mostly a striker, and you know Mo is almost certainly going to get the takedown, so I guess we get to see how much BJJ Cavalcante has picked up training with the Nog Brothers. I personally hope he does get the win because that will open up a title shot for Babalu.

Tim Kennedy is no slouch of a fighter. He’s got a pretty balanced record with only two losses (1 by Dec, 1 by cut) and a win record with 5 KO, 6 Subs, and only 1 Dec. If he can keep it on his feet he might have a chance against Jacare, but if they end up on the ground he’ll probably be in a world of trouble.

I like Jorge Gurgel, but for some reason he just doesn’t have it against top, or even middle, tier competition. His weapon is his ground game and Noons is mostly a standup fighter, so we’ll see how this one plays out. Gurgel has never been KO’d, but I’m thinking that’s going to change or else he’s going to get brutalized en route to a decision loss.

  • Creature says:

I personally would just like 2 know when hendo is fighting again and against who. and if hes gonna stay at MW or jump back 2 LHW. anyone heard anything about that?

  • KTru says:

Babalu called out Hendo, also Dan said the cut to MW drains him and would prefer for the time being, fight at 205. But then again, Coker said he would participate in the upcoming MW tourney

  • KTru says:

as for the article, aside from King Mo, nothing is certain for who is on this card. Probably won’t be official until 2 weeks before the night of the fights, as SF Likes to do

  • hindsightufuk says:

great to see Sergei back, i’m a big fan. i thought he was gonna be the greatest heavyweight back when he started fighting in Pride, didn’t work out but i still like watching him

  • JabCrossHook says:

Sergei is a natural LHW, but he makes up the size difference in punching power and will power. His KO avenging with against Alistair Overeem was classic. Alistair is just running away BOOOM cross to the head. Awesome.

  • Dufresne says:

KTrue, I had completely forgotten about Babalu calling out Hendo, good call.

If they do end up fighting I really wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of that fight got a title shot. Babalu more or less deserves one already, and if Hendo beats him they could make a case for that. But Babalu’s seems to depend on not only beating Hendo, but also on Mo losing. So who knows?

  • LiverPunch says:

OK card I guess. Not happy that Gurgel is the next opponent for KJ but whatever.
Sergei weighs about 250 doesn’t he?
Looking forward to seeing Jacre again.
Any idea who is in MW tourney?
Jacre, Le, Smith, Lawler, Manhoef, Villasenor, Lindland, Kennedy, Hendo, Mayhem are all possibles but if it is 16 men, then who?. I hope guys like Santiago, Khalidov, Rua, Leites, Misaki, Filho, Galesic and co are interested.Even Sakuraba would be OK.
