Urijah Faber on his way to 135 pounds

At last weeks UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas, ProMMARadio caught up with Urijah Faber and asked him what his plans going forward were after losing a bid for the title to Jose Aldo in April. It seems the featherweight star and poster-boy for the WEC is planning on a move to the bantamweight division.

“It sounds like [the WEC] wants me to go down to 35,” Faber revealed. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, have some fights down there.”

Faber doesn’t think it will be particularly difficult for him to shed the extra 10 pounds to make the weight limit.

“All through college I was 133 pounds,” he said. “I’m probably a natural [bantamweight], it won’t be difficult for me.”

This, of course, opens the doors for a potential superfight against former champion Miguel Angel Torres, who has dropped two straight in losing his championship to Brian Bowles and a comeback fight to Faber teammate Joseph Benavidez. Regardless of who he faces, however, it seems likely that a bantamweight title shot would not be far away, should Faber win his first fight in the new division. Faber has already beaten current WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, albeit three years ago and at featherweight, so that matchup is easy to build upon. The aforementioned teammate, Benavidez, was beaten by unanimous decision when he faced Cruz in August of last year.

Luckily, Faber’s legion of fans won’t have to wait long to see him in the cage again.

“Not 100% sure when [I’m going to fight next], but it’s going to be fairly soon,” said Urijah.

With no match-ups announced, or even hinted at, looking past WEC 49 later this month, there are plenty of cards to fill. The “California Kid” won’t be gone for long.

He’s gonna have to drop some muscle, but that might actually be just what he needs. At a lighter class he should be faster and naturally stronger than most of his opponents.

  • MCM says:

Are they gonna have Jens Pulver drop to 135 so Urijah can beat him for a title shot there too?
Sorry folks, but Faber has one quality win in the past 3 years. He’s should have to get at least three wins before he’s given a shot…..corse, we know that aint gonna happen.

We all know it’s a bit biased to say the least when it comes to Urijah, but let’s face it he was a little small against the elite featherweights. I think that he has a much more exciting and competitive career ahead of him at bantamweight.

I like Faber and I hope he finds success in this move and I’m actually really glad he / WEC didn’t decide he needed to move up a class cause that wasn’t going to work… Good luck to hIm and I can’t wait to see his next fight.

He will have some very exciting fight at 135, cant wait for the Torres match though. That match- even with both fighters having lost there last fight- will be great and ppv worthy.

Sounds like a plan. Get ’em CK.
