Thiago Alves out of UFC 111 bout with Jon Fitch

Bad news, fight fans: The scheduled UFC 111 fight between welterweight title contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves has been canceled.

The cause of the cancellation was a failed prefight CT scan by Alves.

The fight was set to serve as a rematch of a 2007 fight which saw Fitch victorious.

The report comes from Yahoo! Sports who cite UFC president Dana White as the source of the unfortunate news.

Due to a lack of time, a replacement for Alves will not be possible. The UFC has instead promoted Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes to the main card of this weekend’s pay-per-view broadcast according to MMAJunkie.com.

UFC 111 will take place Saturday, March 27 from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Terrible news. I hope whatever is wrong can be fixed and Alves can continue doing what he loves.

Still a good card but this is a huge blow to it, I cant complain to much about getting to see Batman fight though as he always puts on a heck of a fight.

Failed CT? That doesn’t sound good.

Kinda sucks for Fitch as well, if he’s not fighting he’s probably not getting payed.

Yeah, that could be really bad depending on what part of his body they were scanning; I’m pretty sure they use a CT to detect tendon tears and ligament damage as well as brain damage and internal tissue damage.

I just hope the guy is going to be OK. Health first, MMA second.

read on another site: “the Scan shows an irregularity involving an artery in Alves’s brain.”
    hope its nothing too serious

Hope his health issue isn’t that serious although
This fight seriously will be missed on the card, and
Pellagrino seriously will be amped that he’s on the main card being a native of NJ…

Looks like Fitch will be fighting Ben Saunders instead.

Consider this speculation, but unless Thiago takes a LOT of damage in practice, we could be looking at something that might not be MMA related. Or maybe his tolerance for blows is different, who knows?

It just struck me as odd that Thiago would have something like this to show when considering the fact that he hasn’t taken that much damage in his fights in comparison to other fighters….like, for example: Jon Fitch.

All I know is that this thing should be monitored, bad, so it doesn’t get out of hand. When something like this pops up without that much indication as of why, it should be taken as a sign of caution.

Kevin Iole first reported this and said that Thiago had taken 3 test’s and failed them all but it is not a bleed, and his agent has said it appears to be something he was born with. They at first were trying to get the fight moved to next week’s fight night but may move it to 112. So it sounds like it is nothing that is going to affect Thiago’s life or careere.

A pre-existing condition? Jeez. That’s a raw deal for Thiago. I don’t want for this to turn into an insurance thing, but does the UFC stand to cover him if that is in fact the case? Or will they kick his ass to the curve if it turns out this was not an injury suffered through either training or performing in the octagon?

Man, if this is indeed the case, it doesn’t look great for Thiago.
