Jamie Varner vs. Kamal Shalorus likely for WEC 48

Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will look to rebound after a tough loss to Ben Henderson by facing the undefeated Kamal Shalorous in a pivotal lightweight showdown on April 24 at the Arco Arena.

The fight is expected to take place on the main card of WEC 48 according to, along with two title fights for the WEC’s first foray into pay-per-view.

Varner returned from injuries in 2009 to face Ben Henderson in a title unifications bout at WEC 46 and lost to Henderson via submission in the third round. After the fight, Varner claimed that he came to fight while Henderson came to grapple, and hopefully he comes ready to grapple against Shalorous.

Shalorous is undefeated in his MMA career with two dominating victories in the WEC over Will Kerr and Dave Jensen. Shalorous represented Great Britain in the 2004 Olympics and made his MMA debut in 2008. A dominant victory over Varner could put him in line for a title shot against the winner of the Donald Cerrone vs. Ben Henderson lightweight title rematch.

WEC 48 takes place on April 24 with Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber for the featherweight championship headlining.

ha brilliant, Kamal is one unorthodox fighter. i really been enjoying watching him recentley. be interesting if his ridiculously wild punches will wok against a more technical fighter like Jamie

I’m calling the upset here- Shalorus by UD.

    Great fight..

I’m going to call Jamie via Knockout..

In Kamal’s past fights I’ve seen some openings that his opponents just didn’t take.. A champion like Varner will definitely take those openings..

Kamal throws some of the hardest bombs I’ve ever seen, but, after a while, they’re predictable and he leaves his head WIIIIIIIIDE open..

    stand and bang…….

was he a wrestler in the olympics or judo player, taekwondo?

  • Makington says:

I can only imagine it was wrestling, fan. His wrestling is mind-blowingly good. He was in the top 10 rankings in the world at one point actually, but that was a little while ago now. It will be interesting to see Varner fight someone who is a better wrestler than him, someone he can’t bully around.

I think this fight comes down to cardio. Shalorus looked great in his first 2 rounds against Jansen recently, but there was a definite drop off in the second half of the fight. Varner on the other hand always comes to fight in top shape. If Kamal gets a little too tired in the third round then his wild, looping punches will be easy for Varner to make him pay for.

With some proper training with his striking technique, Kamal could definitely be a champ, and this is the absolute perfect fight to see how far its come. Overall though, I will call Varner by TKO r3.

    Thanks Makington, good inside info.

If Shalorus’s boxing game is any better than it was against Dave Jansen, I think Shalorus will blow through Varner.

It wasn’t especially bad against Jansen, but there was LOTS of room for improvement. World class wrestler + tight(er) boxing = lotsa hurt for Varner.
