During the post UFC 110 press conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that a potential match up between Japanese middleweight Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva, who successfully won a close fight against Michael Bisping last night, could be the up next for both fighters.
The fight was originally billed for last night’s UFC 110, but Akiyama was replaced on the card by Bisping.
“Akiyama wants to fight Wanderlei very bad, it’s a big fight, and he wants this fight,” said White. “We offered him a fight but he said wants Wanderlei.
“So you know, Wanderlei’s sitting here with stitches and a black eye and everything else. He’s going to go home heal and relax and then we’ll talk to Wanderlei and see when he’s ready but yeah Akiyama wants this fight.”
When “The Axe Murderer” was informed of Akiyama’s desire to fight, Silva was prompted with a question by local press as to who he wanted to fight next Silva bluntly replied, “Akiyama”.
White continued to suggest this fight was almost guaranteed to happen when he stated, “That just pissed him off that I said Akiyama wants to fight him. So now he wants to fight Akiyama.”
This potential blockbuster could possibly go down on the 12th of June at UFC 115 in Vancouver. Whether or not Wanderlei will have recorded enough and have enough time to conduct a full training camp leads doubts as to whether the fight will go ahead at UFC 115, however both men are eager to battle against each other in the octagon meaning this fight looks almost certain to happen.
