Yoshihiro Akiyama on deck for Wanderlei Silva

During the post UFC 110 press conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that a potential match up between Japanese middleweight Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva, who successfully won a close fight against Michael Bisping last night, could be the up next for both fighters.

The fight was originally billed for last night’s UFC 110, but Akiyama was replaced on the card by Bisping.

“Akiyama wants to fight Wanderlei very bad, it’s a big fight, and he wants this fight,” said White. “We offered him a fight but he said wants Wanderlei.

“So you know, Wanderlei’s sitting here with stitches and a black eye and everything else. He’s going to go home heal and relax and then we’ll talk to Wanderlei and see when he’s ready but yeah Akiyama wants this fight.”

When “The Axe Murderer” was informed of Akiyama’s desire to fight, Silva was prompted with a question by local press as to who he wanted to fight next Silva bluntly replied, “Akiyama”.

White continued to suggest this fight was almost guaranteed to happen when he stated, “That just pissed him off that I said Akiyama wants to fight him. So now he wants to fight Akiyama.”

This potential blockbuster could possibly go down on the 12th of June at UFC 115 in Vancouver. Whether or not Wanderlei will have recorded enough and have enough time to conduct a full training camp leads doubts as to whether the fight will go ahead at UFC 115, however both men are eager to battle against each other in the octagon meaning this fight looks almost certain to happen.

This will be a tougher fight for ‘Wand. Akiyama has a better chin than Bisping, so ‘Wand won’t be able hang back and then flurry in the last 30 seconds of the round.

His standup ain’t that much better than Bisping’s, either, but who knows. If Akiyama takes this, it has to be on the ground.

Akiyama has been sitting on the bench for quite a while now which is a shame because he’s an exciting fighter to watch. Would love to see him in a tune up fight before Wand…. but there really aren’t a lot of easy fights to be had. Maybe a good one might be against Cote.

Ideally, this fight needs to happen in a UFC Japan event. Both are massive there and it would be good for Japanese MMA in general. Some interesting US vs Japan matchups maybe.

Isn’t it amazing that nearly all fighters in upcoming fights have some sort of grudge?. Kind of like the WWE. I’m sure sometimes they do have a grudge but come on! it is a little old and over done isn’t it?.

yep i agree, course there is gonna be some sort of grudge, its natural when you are about to fight someone. but yeah, wish the media would stop trying to promote this grudge angle, it didnt work with Bisping/Wanderlei cos it was just half hearted banter

agree with edub too, much better fights could take place for both fighters, unless the UFC gets over its fear of Yakuza and heads back to Japan

  • I dont think its so much a grudge as just the natural reaction to “Im gonna whoop his ass” is “No, Im gonna whoop his ass .” Or something of that nature. Yeah them saying people have grudges is getting old and no we don’t need it but in instances like Bisping Vs. Wandy it just adds a little bit of humor and flair to the fight. Rampage and Wanderlei DONT like each other, so that wasn’t really played up hype, neither did Hughes and Serra, Hughes and Trigg, Chuck and Tito and so on. People truly not liking each other can make for an interesting fight (See above) or it can make for a boring fight as they each play it safe not to lose. (Kos vs. Diego for example.)

On the other hand Bisping, Hardy, Tito and a few other fighters have said they THRIVE off of drama and trash talk. It helps them mentally which may be childish but as Dan Hardy said after he beat Marcus(in a fight I had Marcus picked to own Hardy) “At this level you need every advantage you can get.” So if you talkin trash gets under a guys skin and throws him off, so be it, that’s his weakness.

Sorry to rant but its a good topic and Its my friday I just got off work.

The fight should be a good one but I’m afraid with all the hype to come the fight might be anti- climatic when they finallly get into the cage- guess we’ll see what happens.

I love Wandy, but akiyama takes this one quite easily. It hits the deck and ends in a submission.

Nar that s not necessarily true, wandi never seems to like anyone he fights yet alone sumone who has asked to fight himmaybe its easier for him to fight that way like bj says, i also occasionally enjoy the hype before fights even if there is a villian i.e hardy vs davis, its never gonna be wiped out might aswell enjoy it in all its entirety

  • sexy-yama says:

bispbing has clear favourtism in the ufc brass since sexyama was meant to fight wandi but bisbitch asked for the spot instead and still lost…. i guess bispbing was a bigger draw fair enuf glad we still get too see wandi vs akiyama thou
