Randy Couture vs. Rich Franklin possible for UFC 115

It looks like Randy Couture‘s next trip to the Octagon won’t be a title fight after all as it now appears extremely possible that the UFC Hall of Famer could face off with a fellow former champion in Rich Franklin this June.

Couture confirmed to Sherdog.com that he had recently been approached about the possible match-up, yet nothing is set in stone as of this time due to prior obligations in Randy’s film career.

If the bout does in fact come to fruition, it seems most likely that the event the pair would square off at would be UFC 115, which is currently expected for June 12 in Vancouver, with an expected headlining bout between Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

Couture would be entering the bout on a two fight win streak with notable wins over Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman, while Franklin was knocked out in his previous outing at the hands of Vitor Belfort following a decision victory over Wanderlei Silva.

wow didnt expect that, great match up. dont care if it doesnt make any sense for either towards a title shot, legends match ups, thats what i want from randy, and this is near as dammit. Love both these guys

Should be a good fight. At this point its just interesting to see how much further Randy can take it. Like Dana said, you just can’t count him out.

what happened to Handy’s title shot? did D’anus make that up?

  • KTru says:

glad to see this match up if indeed it holds up.

another fight Randy can win and get another legitimate step towards a title shot. To the detractors, less fuel to cry about how “deserving” he is. Also it helps the Vancouver fans feel better about having Liddell and Ortiz as a main event.

good, good, and good all around

This could turn out to be a great matchup. Rich has strong wrestling, but probably not as good as Randy’s. I don’t think Randy will want to stand and trade with Rich though, as Rich has shown he can stand and trade with anyone not named Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort.

I’ll watch because I always do, but this one will be pretty predictable. Randy will try and keep Rich pressed against the cage, and Rich will try to keep the fight in the center of the octagon. Rich does have a decent muy thai clinch (admittedly not as good as Anderson Silva’s), and that might help when he’s against the cage. Randy will have a size and strength advantage, though, and he probably has a better chin at this point. I think Rich has taken more recent damage in the form of ko’s. I’d give the edge to Randy.

    Wow.
Randy, Rich, Tito, and Chuck all headlining the same card…..welcome back to 2004.;)

  • Rece Rock says:

All the powers that be in the UFC see is $ dollar signs $ when you mention this match up…

  • Rich S. says:

Ok, I know Randy has been doing good and all, but CERTAINLY this is one Rich can win..
Rich SHOULD have the power to stay off the cage, and he’s one of the smartest fighters this sport has ever seen, so he should be able to counteract anything Couture gives him..

  • Makington says:

This UFC isn’t for a few months yet.

If I were to go by the trend I would assume that all 4 of the headlining fighters will be injured by then.

I refuse to let myself get excited at this point.

  • Guthookd says:

I’ll look forward to this one as well. It’s hard to even say how it might go down. It will be interesting.

Doesn’t make sense how a win over Rich Franklin would translate into a fight for Light Heavy Championship. Rich is closer to the MW title and light years away from LH with his last 2 fights as catchweight. Randy would still need to prove himself in yet another match (Rashad Evans or better) to truly be considered a contender in LH. If Randy loses this match, goodbye chances at another title and then he’ll probably go the way of Mark Coleman with another big name fight with winner of Tito/Chuck, lose it and then get cut or made an announcer.

I like this match up both are former champions and both are in the latter stages of their careers. Rich has the advantage in the stand up, and has a possiblity of putting Randy to sleep, Randy’s chin has been a big question mark in his last few fights. Other than that its hard to believe the man is almost 47. Randy I think will be able to put Rich on his back whenever he wants, but every fight starts on the feet.

wow-kinda odd .for one the fact that its not till june and 2 bc its not against a contender

  • Jak says:

Legends or not, i don’t like that the first trip to Vancouver has 3 of 4 fighters in the main events coming off losses. and not just losses. bad losses.

    Liddell – Ktfo and ktfo
Franklin – ktfo and a loss to Hendo
Ortiz – poor performance against Griffin
Couture – 1 for 3. his Nog fight was legendary, his past 2 have been as forgettable as that fight was legendary.

  • Jak says:

    I know Franklin beat Wanderlei… i just forgot about it… and even that wasn’t a great win…. :)

  • JabCrossHook says:

Rich has an advantage in stand up? Maybe, never certain. In kicks maybe but in straight boxing I think Randy’s hands are better. The way he just technically took apart Coleman in the first 30 seconds and moving fluidly, landing the jab and the footwork was pretty decent. In fact better than Rich’s IMO.

  • dpk says:

Why can’t some people just sit back and enjoy what should be a competitive fight between two former Champions. I don’t think a win by either of these guys earns a title shot, but it should be a pretty fun fight between contrasting styles.

  • Dufresne says:

I think it will be a fun fight to watch, and against any other 46 year old, Franklin would have the clear cardio advantage.

As it stands, I think Franklin has better striking in the hands, feet, knees and elbows, but you have to give the wrestling to Randy. He’s legendary at pressing people against the cage, getting the takedown, and working the GnP. Franklin is pretty good at getting up, but Randy managed to keep Chuck down and finish him with GnP, and that’s damn near impossible by most mortals.

I would give this fight to Franklin because he’s got better striking and better movement than Randy does, but unless this fight ends early it could be surprisingly competitive.

  • I really think that Randy would dominate this fight.

I don’t think that Franklin hits as hard and Big Nog or Brock and Rich doesn’t have the ground game of Big Nog or the wrestling background of Brock nor does he have the size of ether man.

Randy also has very good head movement. Rich isn’t fast. Randy isn’t a wild brawler like Wanderlei or Henderson. Randy picks his shots and takes guys down at will besides Brandon Vera, who has a greco roman background.

Yep ..Couture buy way of ground and pound set up by good clean jabs and a over had right 😀

  • Creature says:

Ok so both Randy and Rich have good stand up and wrestling

Id give the stand up edge 2 rich and wrestling 2 randy

cardio 2 rich as well, but randy with a better chin.. i honestly expect rich 2 get the win via decision but i cant count randy out.. definitely an exciting fight
