Exclusive: Bobby Lashley vs. Jimmy Ambriz at “Strikeforce: Miami” (UPDATED)

Jimmy "The Titan" Ambriz

(As of Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. ET, FiveOuncesofPain.com has received word from sources close to the situation that Jimmy Ambriz is still the front runner to face off with Bobby Lashley. According to our sources, the fight is believed to be close to being finalized.)

FiveOuncesofPain.com has been informed by sources close to one of the fighters involved with the bout that Jimmy Ambriz ( 14-12-1) has been selected to fight Bobby Lashley at “Strikeforce: Miami”

The event will take place on January 30 from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. “Strikeforce: Miami” will air live on Showtime in the United States, while being broadcast live on the Super Channel in Canada.

The news comes just one day after reports that Yohan Banks had been ruled out by the Florida State Boxing Commission.

Ambriz is a massive former King of the Cage super heavyweight champion that normally competes near the 300 pound mark. “The Titan” recently dropped three bouts in a row to the likes of Sergei Kharitonov and Jeff Monson (twice) before rebounding with a first round TKO over Chris Clark at the Midwest Fighting Championships in August of 2009.

Thats the problem with this TBA business… They need to work on that before it bites them in the ass.

  • Rece Rock says:

How bout the waste of a main card slot on walker… Theres at least 2 fights on the prelims I would rather see than Walker…
Do they really think his fans from the 80’s are in a rush to tune in?? If anything Mainevent him on a challengers card so you can draw attention to other up and comers … SF’s decisions baffle me at times.

  • joshuawood says:

If Lashley wants to fight Fedor like he says, he needs to face better competition than this.

  • ndizzle says:

ambriz has the experience fighting names,he has fought monson, kharitonov, barnett, waterman and others.

  • joshuawood says:

Personally, I can’t figure out why Jay Hieron is not on the main card!

sounds good… don’t know if they actually care though. But good enough reason I guess.

It’s not like he beat any of them. it’s not really experience losing to every “named” fighter he’s fought.

yup its experience win or lose its still experience, didnt say he won just has fought them

Getting your ass handed to you a whole bunch of times cannot be considered gaining experience. It’s called getting your ass handed to you a whole bunch of times. This fight, for obvious reasons, will not see a 2nd round, and is definitley being used as a way to showcase Lashley. I say Good Luck to you sir!!

  • xtreme_machine says:

there is always a puncher’s chance

    i hope Lashley gets KO

  • EH….Lashley will get there eventually…Im a huge fan of this guy…Im gonna get lambasted here but Im a pro wrestling fan too and when Lashley came out I always thought he was better suited for a real combat sport instead of sports entertainment. I was overly stoked to see him come to MMA. He’ll probably tear through Ambriz, get Big Foot next and then get Fedor or Werdum. Either way I see a great future for Bobby and this is just another step on the way to it.

At this rate, Lashley will be prepared to fight top contenders by 2015 and if the Mayans are right, we may never see it.

  • Curly Biddles says:

You may not like it, but Hershel got the main card slot by going on talk shows and ESPN repeatedly promoting the event and the sport of mixed martial arts. Sure, he is not an experienced MMA fighter, but I assure you the ratings are likely to be drastically increased compared to previous Strikeforce shows that did not include their biggest draws. So, if Hershel is increasing the audience by 15-35%, that is exactly the percentage that would be miffed by him not being televised. This is common sense. I actually think he will be a pleasant surprise of old age speed and skill. We’ll see.

Judging by the comments here it sounds like those dismissing this fight as a squash match haven’t watched Lashley fight.

The guy may be built like a superhero, but he hasn’t been overly impressive in any of his fights. He’s fairly one dimensional.
A fight here with Ambriz is the perfect fight for him at this stage. More cage time with an opponent who doesn’t impose a serious threat. That’s how you build fighters.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Strikeforce line up a fight with Ron Waterman next for Lashley. A fight that was supposed to happen back in November.

That being said the top 3 fights on this card are outstanding and you can call Herschel Walker’s involvement a freak show all you want I am interested in seeing his fight.

  • ndizzle says:

i don’t think this fight is happening not ambriz

  • gsueagle says:

Strikeforce should just postpone the debut of Bobby Lashley and let him headline the next installment of the Challengers Series and replace his fight on the Jan. 30th card with the Hieron vs. Riggs fight.

The problem i have isn’t the opponent they find, it’s the super short camp that opponent gets. the first guy only had 3 total MMA fights so to have a 2 and half week camp heightens the chance of easy injury.

Even though this guy has many more fights, a short camp is a short camp and it’s not real fair to go up against a 265+ lb wrestler with such a short training camp. Again, it heightens injury potential for the opponent.

I could give a sh*t if Lashley fights 10-15 cans to start his career, but at least give them a fighting chance and allow them to have a full camp to prepare, don’t tell them 2 weeks before the fight that they are fighting a solid strong wrestler and they only have 2 weeks to prepare.

Somebody needs to update FiveOuncesofPain.com before we can ever conquer the TBA problem.

EVENTS section has not been updated since 2008.

  • Kamakosmo says:

eqad81: LOL, looking thru that list, I’m saying to myself, “Goddamn, I’ve given the UFC a lot of money in the past few years!!!

  • mu_shin says:

Jimmy Ambriz will have to at least put up more of a fight than Yohan Banks would have, as it seems the Florida state athletic commssion agreed. I’m another fan looking for good things from Lashley, but would think he’s ready to step up a bit at this point. Maybe after he smashes this guy, we’ll see him fight a more well matched opponent. We can hope…

  • ndizzle says:

according to strikeforce officials ambriz is out as opponent

  • Rece Rock says:

@ ndizzle- yea they reported it else where also…. good job SF… keep the TBA bullshit up and you’ll wind up fucking up a more important fight eventually. Hope they don’t rush Lashley into an opponent he knows nothing- makes no sense, it’s like the opposite of what they intended to do to begin with.

  • ndizzle says:

the only reason this fight didnt happen was cuz showtime blocked this from happening.
