The UFC 108 Curse Strikes Again: Steve Cantwell out of bout with Vladimir Matyushenko

ufc 108In what has been a nearly unprecedented series of unfortunate events, yet another bout has been scrapped from the plagued UFC 108 card just days before the event.

Steve Cantwell has recently been forced to pull out of his anticipated match-up with Vladimir Matyushenko due to undisclosed circumstances according to a recent report by MMAWeekly.

With UFC 108 just several days away, the prospect of finding a late replacement opponent for “The Janitor” seems unlikely at best, but if anyone can do it, it would seem as if UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva is the man for the job.

Here’s a quick list of the bouts that had been previously expected for the card, but have fallen through due to a laundry list of reasons:

  • Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin
  • Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
  • Junior dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
  • Paul Daley vs. Carlos Condit
  • Jim Miller vs. Tyson Griffin
  • Jim Miller vs. Sean Sherk
  • Martin Kampmann vs. Rory Markham

with the way fighters are dropping from this card I will be surprised if it acually happens. Really I dont care if they only have the main card left as long as Rashad gets the w which he should, I’ll be happy(and I get to see Gilbert Yvel in the ufc finally).

Funny how 4 months ago Fedor got so much heat for not signing with UFC, yet since signing with SF SF has signed Dan Henderson, King Mo, Aoki is on the way, SF co promotes and has agreement to co-promote with both Dream and Sengoukou. Where as UFC lost their HW due to illness, injuries have plagued every UFC card since not signing Fedor. UFC also adds TUF11 and chooses Tito(Jacob) Ortiz vs Chuck Liddell.

With all the injuries happening with UFC and the moves that SF has made and is making, I think UFC still is the premier league but momentum is definitely not on their side.

The card still looks ok without this match.the ufc(much like smaller organizations)neeeds a per diem talent pool to pull from in there cases. Not contracted fighters but proffesionals in all weight classes that are willing to fill in at a moments notice and get paid accordingly.Oviously with a win the unknown fighter might be offered a contract. It really just keeps the other fighter from being screwed out of a paycheck and lets the fans see them fight.

I’m actually pretty happy with most of the changes to this card. Sure it sucks not having Anderson or Brock as the main event but most of the changes have been for the better.

Dos Santos v Yvel is gonna be crazy, and a much more exciting fight than Gonzaga.
Condit bores me and now we get to Hazelett vs Daley. Will it be an insane sub or a sick KO? Could go either way.
Miller’s a good fighter but he was gonna get lay’d on against Sherk and Griffin, now we’re get to see how good his chin is.
I’m kinda upset the Markham is off but this is a much harder test for Kampman and could be a big win for Volkmann. This and the Daley match both have implications in the 170lb division.
And speaking of implications in their division, the main event is pretty much a #1 contenders match for the LHW belt. If Silva wins in dominating fashion it’s clear he’s next inline for the title, and if Rashad wins it makes his inevitable match with Rampage that much more exciting.

UFC did a damn good job putting this card together with all the problems it had.

I pretty much agree with everything other then the Miller getting lay’d on comment. Those are the 2 wrestlers more so Sherk then Griffin that dont lay on their opponents as much as others. I love fights and will enjoy this as much as any other.

It’s still a good card. It would be nice to see the Janitor in action but it can wait. I’ll still watch. Go Silva.

How do you get injured a week before the fight Steve? Come on man, that’s amateur. He should be working on his weight cut right about now with only light training lest he over train and peak at the wrong time. Apparently there’s some guy out there who hates the number 108 and is running aroud with a crowbar attacking every fighter he can find.

If I were any of the other guys I would pretty much wear a suit of bubble wrap for a week.

Dana must be like “just get it over with”

I would easily pay $55 to see the card of all the cancelled fights. Wow, that’s what a card should look like.

This all comes as such a shocking surprise to all of us…

I guess “the janitor” won’t get to take out the trash?

I just can’t wait for UFC 111 when do those tix go on sale? I’m from NYC that’s the closest I’m getting to UFC coming to NY ( for now) soooo amped.

Even for an organization as big as the UFC, it’s hard to put on 10-12 shows a year and not get hit with a lot of injuries. That said, this card does pale in comparison with other cards in 2009 and definitely the weakest of the end of the year cards. The UFC should consider putting on more free shows, particularly with non-title cards. There is only so much you can squeeze PPV for, and even hardcore repeat buyers will grow tired of $55/view 10 times a year. Dana will eventually figure out there are diminishing returns until he widens their viewer base, which is what the Strikeforce/CBS partnership will do.

  • Bad Monkey says:

Can we just agree at this point that any healthy fighters left on this card should just ride the exercise bike the rest of the week and not allow any one else to touch them??

    WAR SILVA AND HAZELETT
