“Strikeforce: Evolution” Weigh-Ins set for Friday in San Jose

Strikeforce evolutionAll 16 athletes will participate in the final weigh-in on Friday, Dec. 18, just one day prior to the STRIKEFORCE: Evolution mixed martial arts (MMA) fight card on Saturday, Dec. 19, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on West Coast). The weigh-in is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, free of charge.

The undefeated Cung Le, one of the most dynamic fighters in MMA, will enter the cage for the first time since relinquishing the STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) title to concentrate on an acting career. Le will face Scott Smith, a hard-hitting puncher and contestant on season four of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter reality show, in the main event.

Josh Thomson will square off with Interim Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez in a long-awaited rematch to determine the undisputed king of STRIKEFORCE’s 155-pound division. Thomson seized the lightweight crown by earning a five round, unanimous judges’ decision over Melendez at HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008.

In other SHOWTIME televised fights, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal will make his STRIKEFORCE debut when he meets Mike Whitehead, Matt Lindland will battle Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at middleweight, and “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler will face an opponent to be determined.

I’m very interested in seeing Mo fight. His career is relativley young, but 5-0 is not a bad start even if the competition was not top of the line (poor Kerr……).

Of course, at 220 lbs he is on the smaller side of the heavyweight spectrum, which makes me wonder if his size may not pose as big a danger to Whitehead as one might think (Mike is listed as a 205’er on fightfinder). Plus, Whitehead has the obvious advantage when it comes to experiencem, which could have some influence on the outcome of the fight.

Another interesting point is that Mo wins by TKO/KO and Whitehead seems to win by submission……so, does Mo have some good defensive grappling skills or is he just going to end it before it goes to the ground?

I can’t wait to find out.

Anyone know if weigh ins are worth going to?

  • Guthookd says:

@ Roshambo: Dude, if you can make it you should go. Unless you have great seats to the event this will be your only chance to see them close enough to actually see them. I’d go just in case I got to me Robbie Lawlor. IMO the guy is is a super pimp bad ass fighter no matter what. No to mention Le.

    Go. Take pictures. Have fun!!

  • neijia says:

Le is definitely one of the most entertaining fighters to watch. Unbelievably great striking and throws including lots of suplexes. Interesting that they don’t match him against a jiu-jitsu specialist. Would be a classic striker vs grappler match (despite Le’s wrestling background). How good is Scott Smith? He is 16-6 in mma so he has more mma experience, but with Le’s more extensive overall experience, I get the feeling people are gonna gripe Le beat another can after this match. Where is he gonna stand relative to the MW championship he vacated not too long ago?

  • hindsightufuk says:

if Le gets past smith, he has to fight Jake next. tho i am surprised Le/Lawler/Diaz arent fighting each other in some form this weekend

  • Nick Havok says:

The MMA this weekend is going to awesome.

First on Friday I’m going to Titan Fighting Championships 15 at Memorial Hall…which will be fun a great time.

Then on Saturday there is Strikeforce: Evolution!

What more could a fan ask for?
