Gabriel Gonzaga out of UFC 108 bout with Junior dos Santos

Gabriel_GonzagaThe dirty little disease plaguing the sport of mixed martial arts known as staph infection has claimed yet another victim in the UFC’s heavyweight division following the news of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s recent withdrawal from his highly anticipated showdown with Cain Velasquez citing a bad case of the infection as his reasoning behind the decision.

It now looks as if Gabriel Gonzaga has been downed and is out of his expected UFC 108 bout with Junior dos Santos according to a recent report over at Yahoo! Sports‘ Steve Cofield.

Gonzaga was looking to build upon a recent TKO victory over Chris Tuchscherer following a knockout defeat suffered at the hands of Shane Carwin, while Dos Santos has gone undefeated in this stint in the Octagon, with stoppage wins over the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic to his credit.

There is no news as of this writing as to a possible replacement opponent for Dos Santos at the event, but stay tuned to as we promise to keep you updated as soon as any information becomes available.

Gonzaga didnt want any part of Dos Santos anyway.

  • nate says:

thats sucks. dos santos vs todd duffee? paul buentello? andre arlovski? all fights id love to see. id really love to see dos santos vs velasquez for winner of carwin brock? i really hope they dont make another interim belt but its also a long wait. i do not envy joe silva at the moment.

  • danw84 says:

I agree nate, maybe Velasquez can fight Dos Santos here? Both were supposed to be on this card anyway, just different opponents.

  • Rich S. says:

What’s the deal with Dos Santos?

He comes in and knocks out then-#1 contender (if I remember correctly), Werdum.
Then, he fights a total newcomer to the UFC, Struve… That, I can pardon, maybe they just wanted to see if his win over Werdum was a fluke.. After that domination he goes on to dismantle and ultimately move Cro Cop into retirement (temporarily?).

Maybe they’re just trying to build up his Highlight Reel, but those wins alone are better than any of the other title contenders’ right now..

    Here’s the picture:

Shane Carwin – Took out Christian Wellisch in debut. Took a step down in competition and fought Neil Wain.. Then, came back from the brink of defeat and KO’d Gonzaga.

Cain Velasquez – Took out the now LHW Jake O’Brien. Notable victories = The off-and-on Cheick Kongo, and Ben Rothwell.

Junior Dos Santos – Beat two all time greats, Werdum and Cro Cop, in devastating fashion, and destroyed another up-and-comer in Struve.

Honestly, with those stats, I think we should be seeing Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez for the interim belt..

the lack of quality HW matchups in the near future is very disturbing to me.

  • xtreme_machine says:

    Dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez

    Gonzaga vs Nogueira

    and finally
    Lesnar vs Carwin

    Mir vs Cro Cop

  • xtreme_machine says:

And if they win their fights

    Mir vs Nogueira II

  • thunder okami says:

    108 really got screwed over

  • KTru says:

As much as it makes sense to pit Cain against JDS, it also hurts the near-future as well.

Having two of the most intriguing and prominent fighters come in to a “Contenders” match will derail one of them for a chance at a title shot.
Whomever loses will fall down the ladder and may never get another opportunity anytime soon. The UFC, in a perfect world, would have rather seen both get there chances for future headlining shows. We do not live in a perfect world. Also throwing Carwin into the mix where he was to fight Cain, would have been the same scenario.

I do not have a solution, but hopefully Joe Silva does.

  • I say JDS vs. Carwin….say what you will but Cain still hasnt really made me think Champion yet. I wanna see him and Nog go at it. we’ll see how Cain handles someone that’s BJJ is better than his wrestling. Plus we know JDS and Nog wont fight…They’re both Black House guys
