Strikeforce headed to Florida on Jan. 30 with the return of Cris Cyborg expected

cristiane-cyborgStrikeforce’s 2010 fight calendar will officially launch with a SHOWTIME televised card on Saturday, January 30 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

The news comes according to SHOWTIME via a press bulletin.

While no matches have been officially announced for the show, Strikeforce female lightweight champion Cris Cyborg is listed by SHOWTIME on the calendar that has been distributed to the media. Cyborg had been expected to make her first-ever defense of the title during Strikeforce’s first-ever broadcast on CBS earlier this month. However, an injury sustained during the famed Abu Dhabi no Gi submission grappling tournament this past September prevented her from formally being added to the event.

Due to Cyborg’s injury situation, it is unclear whether it is fully assured that she will be competing on Jan. 30. If she is able to compete, the likely challenger for the bout will be Dutch sensation Marloes Coenen. Coenen guaranteed herself a title shot with a first round submission of Roxanne Modafferi during a non-televised bout that aired prior to CBS and Strikeforce’s “Saturday Night Fights: Fedor vs. Rogers” telecast on Nov. 7.

In addition to Cyborg, the SHOWTIME sports calendar also promised the MMA debut of former NFL Pro Bowl running back Herschel Walker.

Sounds like I’m gonna need to find myself a place with Showtime to watch this! Cyborg is a monster in the female division and I know she’ll put on a fantastic show.

She seems to me like a young, female, Wandy. Always headhunting, vicious power, fast pace, and scary as hell if you’re trapped in the cage/ring with em.

I mean does she forget her name or something?. Has she got directions to her home tattooed on the other arm in case she gets lost?

Yeah…. while I’m not a fan of the whole “last name tattoo” thing, I can at least understand it. Getting your whole name, though? Well, first name and nickname… still dumb…
