Billy Evangelista vs. Jorge Gurgel set to headline Nov. 6 Strikeforce Challengers

strikeforcecrestA lightweight showdown between Billy Evangelista and Jorge Gurgel has recently been announced as the main event for a Strikeforce Challengers card that has been set for November 6.

The event will take place from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California and will air live on Showtime.

Casey Olson has also been announced for the card against an opponent yet to be determined.

The undefeated Evangelista has established himself as one of the premier up and coming lightweights in Strikeforce with recent victories over the likes of Marlon Sims, Nam Phan and Luke Caudillo. Evangelista’s last performance in the cage was ruled a no-contest after striking a downed Mike Aina with a knee to the head.

With a career record of 13-5, the always entertaining Jorge Gurgel has picked up wins over Diego Saraiva, John Halverson, and most recently, Conor Heun during the course of his career.

Good job Larry Coker. I think this will be a good scrap and Im anxious to see if evangelista can make the jump to legitimate contender from prospect.

    Jorge Gurgel 2nd TKO

  • metalmulisha says:

    Larry Coker.

Didn’t he used to coach the Miami Hurricanes?

  • Angry Mike says:

Why would a win over Gurgel make Evangelista a “legitimate contender?” Gurgel doesn’t have enough quality wins for a win over him to mean much.

  • edub says:

    Mulisha- Scott Coker…. dick.

Mike- Im not saying a win over Gurgel would turn him into a legitimate contender overnight. I just think if he looks impressive against Jorge who is usually a game opponent for anyone, then it could only help him to develope further as a fighter. In turn he would move closer to becoming a legitimate contender from just being a prospect.

  • Joseph says:

This is a great match-up here. This is going to be all out fireworks. Can’t wait for this event, and I do agree that a win here for either guy will be huge, specially for Evangelista.
