Affliction Trilogy Has Been Cancelled

Sad news fight fans, Affliction Trilogy has been abandoned.

The news comes via a recent report from Josh Gross at SI.com who has been able to confirm the event’s cancellation with multiple sources.

Apparently Affliction VP Tom Atencio was on the phone bright and early this morning contacting fighters to notify them that they will not be fighting next Saturday evening.

The nail in the coffin for Affliction Trilogy’s recent scrapping was undoubtedly Josh Barnett recently being pulled from his main event bout with Fedor Emelianenko due to testing positive for steroids for the second time in his professional fighting career.

Although it appears as thought the event is a done deal, no official word has been released from Affliction on its status at this time, and it is unclear as to whether they may still change their minds on the cancellation.

Stay tuned to FiveOuncesOfPain.com as we continue to keep you up to date on this developing story.

BAM, POW!! Who saw THIS coming!!??

  • TheHouse says:

Dana White is currently working with a bunch of scientists to invent a new word for happiness. Most likely designed to follow an F-bomb.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

I wonder if this is going to turn into the straw that breaks the camels back….

  • Angry Mike says:

Hell of a choice for Affliction. Push forward with a diminished card or pull the plug. Barnett better change his name and get out of town fast.

  • hindsightufuk says:

why not just cancel the fedor fight and carry on with the rest of the card?

  • hindsightufuk says:

august is turning out to be a wee bit of a shitter then

  • fanoftna33 says:

This card had some very good fights on it, more so than just Fedor, maybe this is a indication to us that ticket sales were not so hot. Losing the main event this close was just to much. Hopefully it still goes on I was really looking forward to
    Yvel v Buentello
    Belfort v Santiago
    Mousasi v Babalu
plus all the IFL guys you know would have put on a solid card. This is sad news.

  • dpk says:

Affliction has now cancelled as many shows as it has run, remember they cancelled back in October and left the fighters who had been training hanging. I hope they just fold quickly as a fight promoting organization and let these fighters out of their Afflction contracts so that they can pursue deals with UFC, Strikeforce, Dream, and Sengoku.

  • Jstew3785 says:

Exactly. Why punish everyone for Barnett’s mistakes? Man, they are going to have to surgically remove the smile from Dana White’s face. I don’t see how Affliction is going to recover from this.
PS- 5oz, do we still get our t-shirts?

  • fanoftna33 says:

I see a hugh fight on the horizon for Barnett
Dream 14 is going to be headlined by
    Barnett vs Antionio Silva
That will be the biggest attraction since the super hulk tournament, come on Drean please sign this fight( and if its not to much trouble could we get Fedor to be the special guest ref)

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

I can’t see Barnett walking away from this without any hostile remarks from other fighters. They have went through an entire training camp by now, are hungry, tired, and pissed off….. I want some interviews with other fighters to see what they think of this whole situation.

I still, like everyone else, don’t understand why they didn’t just push forward with the card.

  • fanoftna33 says:

It all comes down to money, without a main event they would have to pay out way more than they would make. It may be the best pure business decision Affliction has made to this day.

  • I have no idea why they couldn’t just pull the plug on Ben Rothwell’s original fight and have him fight Fedor.

Crappy news, I was looking forward to this event.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

This card still could have been salvaged in SO many different ways. This actually may have generated MORE PPV #’s with all the controversy, considering who they may have brought in as the replacement.

  • edub says:

    I agree Ozz.

With all the controversy regarding this event now I dont see how it could effect the event badly with the average fan. You have a story where you bring in some fighter on 2 weeks notice to fight the best guy in the world.

I dunno maybe Im just bitter but I know not that many fans knew who Barnett was(outside of the harcores of course). I just think this was a easily salvagable situation, and someone overreacted.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

I’d really like to find out more about this. C’mon Tom! Tell the fans what’s really going on!!

Seriously, as big of a tornado as this caused in our community, I can’t help but feel, well, let down. You’re cancelling your ENTIRE card b/c you lost a challenger, a contender, for the HW Belt? You didn’t lose the star, you lost the damned challenger!!

I know, I know, preachers’ gettin’ fired up. It just feel slighted, let down and lied to. What happened to Wed night when Tom told us he would, “Have a challenger named by morning” which would have been yesterday morning.

To top it all off, where does this leave the new MMA fan? Do they now think this is a normal occurence and lose interest? We are suppossed to be growing, teaching and educating new fans, not showing them the door a week out from the event.

    Tom, BOO you

  • I can almost assuredly say that 99% of the people who were going to buy this PPV headlined by Fedor/Barnett were still going to buy it if it were headlined by Fedor/Belfort or Monson or Stay Puft or the corpse of Ronald Reagan.

Zombie Reagan would have equaled EPIC BUYS in California, they love that guy there.

  • Snoop Dogg says:

please say this isn’t so. WTF I imagine they are going to lose a lot of money by not putting on the show with all the money spent on licensing and advertising to just waste. Atleast with putting the fight on you have a chance to make money. With Frye and Monsoon and vitor all ready to go call one and let’s do this thing

  • edub says:

    Reagan smash.

  • PlagueAngel says:

There has to be something more to this then reported. Maybe the losses of revenue were going to be big before the Barnett cancellation and now they are going to be catastrophic losses. Trust me, this is not an overreaction, this is business.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

    That was fckuing hilarious

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

The only thing I can think of is maybe there are legal implications. You’re selling your cards main event. Tickets have already went on sale, and people have paid for them. Maybe it is cheaper to cancel than it is to change the main event and wind up getting sued b/c someone didn’t “get what they paid for?”

I may be a bit off in my lingo, but I think that may have something to do with it, great point PlagueAngel

  • L0C0541 says:

I think Fedor should push for this event to still happen and for the promoters to find a replacement, as their is credible and willing opponents out there. I know their are the head honchos to deal with but i think fedor is a valuable enough commodity to get it done. I think him and his managers have enough power to do it, I mean the promotion was pretty much built around him. IMO i for some reason feel as if fedor dont care enough for the american fans to make it happen, unless things are done his exact way. man this sucks, Affliction: Elite XC style

  • edub says:

See the problem with that is Plague how are they going to from bad to catastrophic just by losing Barnett??? He simply is not that well known of a guy…

Id like to do a little experiment on 5 oz right now. Everyone ask your friends who range from (watch mma everyonce in a while- always catch the “UFCs”) who Barnett is.

Im willing to bet the most u’d get is the guy who is/was going to fight Fedor.
And Id be willing to bet my savings account that not one of those would answer with the #2 HW in the world.

  • Patrickk says:

    wow. speechless.

  • Gurthee says:

Tom Atencio, coming soon to a town near you “living in a van, down by the river!”. Jerk! Hey Tom, go get a mohawk and start wiping a$$es for $1.00 a pop. I’d bet he’s better at that than he is at promoting fights.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

Agreed. Promotion was built around Fedor. Fedor is the attraction. BOTTOM LINE. They could have used ANYONE and it would not have been that significant.

A lot of people started to really get their feathers ruffled though when they were going to pull another fight apart (Belfort / Santiago)

I believe this is where it all spiraled out of control.

  • s13 says:

This could work out well for Strikeforce….think about it…Babalu is the strikeforce LHW champ, he could now fight Gerard Mousasi under the Strikeforce banner for his belt, which could sooth the pain of losing the HW title fight. So many doors open with the cancellation of the card. I don’t think Tom realises that Jeff Monson has been on an absolute tear and is more known here in the USA than Josh Barnett (for positive reasons and not the positive ‘testing’ hehe). I would much rather see jeff fight fedor than josh who obviously needs an edge in title fights…lets think about it, when will he realise that roids have made him 0-2 in title fights so far. Each time he fights for a belt, he juices…interesting ‘co-incidence’ don’t you think?

  • s13 says:

…but then again according to Derrick, everyone juices. :)

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

I just got this from someone else, MrNova. Tell me what you guys think-

“My theory: Affliction had purchased insurance premiums for the main event. In case one of the fighters was injured, got arrested or failed a drug test, they would get a hefty payout.

And the payout represented more value than the cost of conitnuing.

Someone at xxxxxx should look into this.”

    5oz? What do you think?

  • RoadsideGraphix says:

The Baby Face Assassin has killed Affliciton

  • Interesting theory, ozz…

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

I can’t take credit for that. That is soley MrNova’s post from another site. I had to bring it here though to higher minds and intelect, LOL.

I can’t post over there anymore. It’s like a bunch of prison inmates. Just wanted to see what you guys thought about it.

    It’s VERY interesting

  • edub says:

Very interesting to say the least Ozz.

  • Iconoclastic says:

That’s possible Ozz, but foresight is not something Affliction is known for.

IMO they’re dropping the ball BIG TIME.
    Barnett just doesn’t have the
name recognition to validate canceling this show.

At the end of the day fans want to see good competitive fights.
I think rest of the fighters (and a replacement for Josh) would have been worth watching. If they do reschedule it will not have the same buzz. There is a reason why the movie industry makes a ton of cash this time of the year. Maybe the final nail in their coffin?

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

You never know. I don’t know about nail in the coffin myself, though. I find it hard to go against Donald Trump. I could be told all day lobg that there are “Official Reports” of Affliction going under, but unless I hear it from The Donald, I would find it very hard to believe.

Completely agree though about the good competitive fights though. That was a really good card. Now, it was just a waste of hype.

  • fanoftna33 says:

Dana could take this as a sign if Affliction goes under. That should mean that Fedor is a free agent and can go where he wants. Right now would be the time for him to try to bargin for Fedor.

  • edub says:

    Heres what needs to happen.

1.Fedor goes to UFC. Fedor fights Brock on new years.

    2. Winner of Cain vs. Shane no longer gets shot at title.

    3. Winner of Randy vs. Nog fights winner of Cain vs. Shane.

    4. Winner of that fight challenges Fedor(I mean winner of Brock vs. Fedor).

    5. Meanwhile winner of CroCop vs Dos antos fights winner of Hardonk vs Barry.(Purely for my amusement.)

  • Kevin Iole is now reporting that Affliction is to once again become a UFC sponsor but the fate of those fighters under an Affliction contract is not known.

Dana White is set to make an announcement on ESPN radio at 9 pm EST.

WTF?!? This story is changing by the minute!

  • Jstew3785 says:

Sounds good edub except the part about Shane/Cain not getting a title shot. If Fedor does not come to the UFC then Carwin needs to be the one to smash Lesnars face. Brock vs Fedor needs to happen but probably never will. Completely agree also about the Cro Cop thing. That would be a sick fight either way.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

Sergio is on to something. Here it is–

Kevin Iole is now reporting that Affliction will now become a sponsor of the UFC:

Later on Friday, Affliction opted to get out of the promoting business and, in a joint statement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, announced it would become a sponsor of the UFC. The fate of the fighters under contract with Affliction is not known yet.

This sh!t is getting crazier by the hour!

  • You know what is crazy…

For as much as Josh Barnett talks shit on Dana White and the UFC, he might have inadvertantly given them a stranglehold on the industry by getting popped for ‘roids and getting the Affliction main event cancelled.

Here’s to you, flabby pro-wrestling Japanophile… a real man of genius.

  • fanoftna33 says:

This is all happening so fast, first Dana wants to kill Tom, now they are partners. Next is the main event for UFC 106- Brock vs Fedor.
After this nothing will surprise me.

  • edub says:

    So what happens to tapout??

  • fanoftna33 says:

there can be more than one sponser, I think TapOut sponsers more then one promotion. It works both ways.

  • edub says:

I know but if there is a big announcement I would assume that they are becoming the main clothing/gear sponsor. And that would mean that tapout gets the shit end of the stick.

  • Jstew3785 says:

There’s no way that they would let Affliction be a bigger sponsor than TapOut.

  • fanoftna33 says:

TapOut has been there so long its hard to imagine them not getting the better end of things. More than likly we will just start to see more Affliction gear around the fights, which means better money for everybody. On a side note I wonder if the UFC will charge Affliction the $100,000 all the other compianies were being charged?

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

Either way, I see it as good for the UFC, Strikeforce, K-1, everybody. Fighters have to find a new banner to fight under, which means more quality fights for us in the long run.

Tapout is a household MMA name by now; They won’t be going anywhere

  • JollyDV says:

Barnett=Oliver North??? Or is that too conspiracy theoristy? I wonder if he got paid to take the fall?

  • fanoftna33 says:

I thought I read somewhere that TapOut was thinking becoming promoters themselfs. They already have opened up tapout traing centers so this is really the next step. Maybe the ufc is prepairing for this by getting Affliction on board now.

  • Dr.Stoppage says:

Man,I don’t ever recall Josh Barnett defeating this many opponents at once.

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

    ROTFFLMFAO!! That sir, was awesome!

  • JollyDV says:

oh Dr. Stoppage, I can’t stop laughing!
