Cain Velasquez vs. Cheick Kongo at UFC 99

The UFC continues to be besieged by injuries as we can now add Heath Herring to the ever growing list of fighters unable to make it to fight night.

According to MMA Fanhouse Herring will not be able to face off against Cain Velasquez next month at UFC 99 in Germany due to an illness he has been suffering from for weeks which has left him unable to train.

The UFC has announced on their website today that Cheick Kongo will replace Herring and take on Velasquez at UFC 99. Kongo who is riding a three fight winning streak was last seen at UFC 97 in April where he defeated Antoni Hardonk by second round TKO. There has been some speculation that Kongo would receive a title shot sometime in the near future and a win over Velasquez will only add fuel to those flames.

Herring who hasn’t fought since being dismantled by current UFC champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 87 last August was to be Velasquez’s toughest opponent to date.

The young up and coming All-American wrestler from Arizona State is seen as the future of the UFC heavyweight division and a bout with Herring was surely going to show everyone what he is really made of. In his last bout against Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night in February Velasquez imposed his will and earned knockout of the night honors with a second round TKO.

Didn’t Kongo say after the Hardonk fight that he broke his hand? How long does it take to recover from that? Seriously, I am asking.

gutted, i was looking forward to Heath vs Cain, that woulda been awesome.

I have to disagree with you a little Bryan, although Kongo will be a step up, Herring was more like a step back. After Cain got the win over O’Brien he needed to step it up not move backwards and face people that Jake had beaten.

This is definately a better fight in my book. The matchup on paper is interesting with a lot of ways it could end. Heath would have been a better matchup for Cain, but maybe he can find a way to get Kongo on his back. We all know now, how you beat Kongo. Plenty of takedowns and hold him down. I think Herring would have still been a step up for Cain, but Kongo is a real challenge. I think Kongo has been working hard on takedown defense based on his last fights, so it should be a great fight.
