Doug Marshall, Cole Escovedo and Erin Toughill return to action with wins at PFC 13

Former WEC light heavyweight champion Doug “Rhino” Marshall returned to the ring for the first time since November last night when he edged out Jaime Jara by split decision in a closely contested, hard fought battle at PFC 13: Validation which took place at The Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California. The fight with Jara was Marshall’s very first fight at 185 pounds when he spent a large chunk of his career in the heavyweight and eventually light heavyweight divisions.

The two spent the majority of the bout on their feet where Jara looked for the takedown in the clinch while Marshall was constantly trying to create distance so he could land some of his big bombs. The Rhino’s ability to prevent Jara from taking him to the canvas while inflicting punishment with short crisp punches was the difference in the razor thin decision.

“The Triangle”, or “The Apache Kid”, call him what you’d like but Cole Escovedo showed that he is back last night. The young Fresno, California native made quite a name for himself with his seemingly indefensible triangle choke and tenacity in the cage while finishing seven of his eleven victories with his trademark submission from 2001-2005 but was forced from the sport due to a crippling condition of staph infection that flooded his blood system.

Escovedo wound up having to finish his opponent Michael MacDonald twice last night before it was all said and done. At the conclusion of the opening round MacDonald tapped out due to an armbar, but because the referee didn’t end up catching it, he was mounted and pounded out midway through the second round giving Escovedo the TKO victory in his first bout back in close to two years.

Former professional boxer Erin Toughill made it four in a row, and two straight since her recent comeback last night when she handily outpointed a game Emily Thompson utilizing her superior striking arsenal.

“Validation” also featured a trio of championship contests. Kyle Pimental opened up a nasty cut on the face of Olaf Alfonso to lay claim to the PFC middleweight championship, Carlo Prater outpointed Dominique Robinson to capture the lightweight strap while Pat Runez caught Anthony Perales in a rear naked choke to secure the flyweight title.
