Houston Alexander is latest victim of UFC 98 curse

The hits just keep on coming. Another fighter has fallen victim to the UFC 98 injury curse as Houston Alexander has been forced to withdraw due to a broken hand he suffered during training.

MMAJunkie has a report detailing the Alexander injury that will force him to miss out on his bout with Andre Gusmao. They are also reporting that Gusmao will still be on the card but no opponent has been named as of yet.

UFC 98 has seen a rash of injuries decimate the card which is scheduled for May 23 and will feature a main event pitting two unbeaten superstars battling it out for the UFC light heavyweight championship. Champion Rashad Evans will defend his title for the first time against Brazilian Lyoto Machida. The original main event was to be for the undisputed heavyweight title as champion Brock Lesnar was to face interim champ Frank Mir in a rematch of their UFC 81 bout that saw Mir win by first round tapout. Mir sustained a knee injury and that fight was moved to UFC 100 in July.

Also forced off the card due to injury is James Irvin who was scheduled to fight Drew McFedries. Xavier Foupa-Pokam has stepped in to fight for Irvin. Josh Koshcheck was scheduled to fight Chris Wilson but a foot injury has seen him replaced by Brock Larson. In a middleweight bout Yushin Okami was set to fight Dan Miller but he was injured as well forcing Chael Sonnen to step in to fight Miller.

The card is still packed with great fights including a welterweight grudge match between the coaches of season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter and former UFC welterweight champions Matt Serra taking on nemesis Matt Hughes. These two were originally scheduled for UFC 79 back in December of 2007 but a back injury forced Serra out of that bout, and Hughes injured his knee in a bout with Thiago Alves at UFC 85. Frankie Edgar will return from a knee injury to fight Sean Sherk in a lightweight battle that could go a long way in determining who faces the winner of the B.J. Penn-Kenny Florian fight at UFC 101 in August.

I enjoy all of the UFC cards. They have great match making abilities! Just because the main fight on the card isn’t what everyone expects doesn’t mean that the rest of the card is horrible.
