UFC releases Vinny Magalhaes

After losing in the finals in last season’s light heavyweight tournament on The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC still had high hopes for Vinny Magalhaes. After all, the man is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well as a two time Brazilian National heavyweight champion.

However, after suffering a second consecutive loss in the UFC to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97 on April 18, Magalhaes will be looking for a new place to fight.

According to the latest print edition of “The Wrestling Observer”, the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class. The fighters who don’t have potential according to the UFC will be sent packing.

Magalhaes entered season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter with plenty of hype due to his impressive background in BJJ. He was widely considered one of the favorites to win the light heavyweight tournament. While on the show, he went on to defeat Lance Evans, Jules Bruchez, and Krzysztof Soszynski. In the finals he ran into the undefeated Ryan Bader who got the win with an impressive TKO victory in just a little over two minutes; ending Vinny’s dream to become the The Ultimate Fighter.

What?! This is F”ing bullsh**!!!!!!!! They know he got robbed in his last fight vs Eliot Marshall. The UFC is getting to be as bad as Boxing when Don King was paying off all of the judges.Vinny was robbed from an obvious win.I suppose they’ll be cutting Matt Wiman too since he also got robbed that night losing a fixed decision to Sam “Hands of Feathers” Stout!!!!!!!!! :-(

  • screwface says:

im not happy about this either. vinny has mad potential. just needs some standup training and i really think he can win a belt 1 day. dudes young and his bjj is awesome. and i stress awesome. but heres to thinking if he can pull of some wins in another org maybe hell be back 1 day. personally i think it was a premature decision but since ufc has made mma into a household name fighters have become a dime a dozen or so it seems.

  • olyhighgerl2007 says:

This is sad if they did, I wasn’t able to watch his latest fight vs. Eliot Marshall but he is still on the fighters roster on so I don’t think they have released him but maybe Dana is threatening him that if he doesn’t win or perform well in his next fight that they will decided to release him!

  • hindsightufuk says:

yep, i still think vinn’ys bjj is the best in the LWH division, possibly in all MMA? certainly in the UFC anyway

  • madiq says:

Looks like UFC’s loss is Strikeforce or DREAM’s gain. Maybe he can fight Sokoudju…

  • kidneybeans says:

losing records don’t cut it in the UFC. He’s got skills in bjj there’s no doubt but he can’t strike his way out of a refrigerator box and has trouble getting most people to the ground. I’m not at all surprised by this cut, but I never like to see a man lose his job. He’ll find somewhere to fight

And robbery is way overboard on both those fights you mentioned Terrible T, they were close and you obviously disagreed with the outcomes but neither was anything close to a robbery.

  • Austin says:

Can someone tell me if Vinny Magalhaes is related to Vinicius”Draculino” Magalhaes?

  • TerribleT says:

kidneybeans there’s no way that Eliot won that fight and if you think he did you are in the minority.I’ve watched that fight 3 times now and I don’t see how anybody could give Eliot the 1st or the 3rd rounds. At the very best you might be able to say the 1st round was even and then maybe you could call the fight a draw but to cut the guy after the way that fight panned out is just straight up wrong!!!!! Plus he submitted Krzyszotof with ease and he’s still around.

  • GetItOn says:

Vinny will be back. He’ll win a few somewhere else and the UFC will let him back in. Dude’s got skills.
