Matt Hamill vs. Brandon Vera moved to UFC 102

Originally scheduled for UFC 101 on August 8th in Philadelphia, the light heavyweight bout between Brandon Vera and Matt Hamill will now take place at UFC 102. is reporting that the fight will be part of the UFC’s first ever trip to Portland which will take place at the end of August. No official date has been confirmed but August 29th has been rumored in many reports. The card is expected to be headlined by two former UFC heavyweight champions and true ambassadors of the sport as Randy Couture takes on Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera.

Both Hamill and Vera are coming off of victories which took place at UFC 96 in March. Hamill defeated fellow wrestler Mark Munoz via 1st round knockout. Hamill was criticized at first for his celebration after landing a vicious head kick which left Munoz motionless for some time. Hamill explained afterwards that he was excited and that the vibrations from the crowd got him all amped up. Vera and Munoz are close friends and are both part Filipino.

Brandon Vera recently defeated Michael Patt via leg kicks and looks to be finally beginning to adjust to life as a light heavyweight. His first two fights at 205 pounds were against Reese Andy which he won via unanimous decision and against Keith Jardine which he lost via split decision. In both of these bouts he did not display his trademark aggression or any of the Muay Thai striking skills that had him on the fast track towards championship gold.

Also rumored for this card is a middleweight match-up between the returning Chris Leben who used to train with Team Quest in Oregon and WEC convert Jake Rosholt. Justin McCully is also expected to face up and coming Brazilian heavyweight Junior dos Santos as well.

does any one know why this fight has been postponed?
I just glad it wasn’t cancelled.I’m not really sure who I will be cheering for, because I’m a fan of both should be a great fight though.

This is a hard one to choose from. Vera definately has the hands and Hamill has the wrestling. Even though i’m a vera fan i have to give the edge to Hamill. Vera hasn’t fought the level of wrestler that Hamill is. If Hamill takes it to the mat instead of trying to keep it standing he might have an easy vicory. Even though he’s no werdum or Sylvia Hamills strength is probably in the same league as theirs. He’s definately a better athlete than either one of those guys.

First of all regarding this fight:

Brandon Vera is a former Division I wrestler for Old Dominion and Navy.
Matt Hamill is a farmer Division III National Champion from Rochester state.

For whatever reasons, I am more impressed by the wrestling stature of a run of the mill Division I athlete than I am a Division III National Champ. It’s comparable to a college basketball game against the Division III National Champs Washington State and Alabama. I’ll pick Alabama in that game.

I’m not trying to discredit Hamill’s wrestling. He has freakish strength, and is strong with the force, but this is not a typical Striker vs Grappler contest. Vera is a much better grappler than Hamill. Besides using his wrestling to keep a fight standing with 6′ 8″ 265 lb Tim Sylvia, he’s a legitimate BJJ brown belt. If Hamill does overpower Vera, he will be submitted rather quickly. Hamill’s standup is absolutely terrible. And Vera would see that sloppy, slow motion head kick coming 10 miutes before it’s thrown. In whatever realm this fight takes place, I would give the advantage to Brandon Vera.
