Gilbert Melendez vs. Rodrigo Damm will be for Strikeforce lightweight interim title

Rodrigo Damm recently stepped up on less than a weeks notice to replace Josh Thomson in a lightweight match up against Gilbert Melendez scheduled for this Saturday night’s Strikeforce card.

Melendez was originally scheduled to face Thomson in a rematch for the promotion’s 155 pound title on the card before the current champion Thomson was forced to withdrawal from the bout due to a broken leg suffered during training.

Strikeforce has recently announced that the bout between Melendez and Damm will now be for the division’s interim lightweight title with the winner to face off with Thomson as soon as he has made a full recovery.

Melendez is Cesar Gracie trained fighter and the former Strikeforce lightweight champion from the same camp as Nick Diaz and Jake Shields among others. He has notched wins over Clay Guida and Rumina Sato during the course of his career.  The fight with Damm will be his first return to action since losing his championship to Thomson in June of 2008.

This fight will mark Damm’s first return to action in the last seven months with his last outing being a losing effort when he was submitted by Eiji Mitsuoka. The Brazilian is known for his dangerous submission arsenal and has compiled a record of 8-2 during his fighting career.

The bout is scheduled to go down tomorrow night, Aprill 11th at the HP Pavilion in Sana Jose, California and will be headlined by a catchweight bout between Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz.
