Gegard Mousasi could make light heavyweight debut vs. Sokoudjou at DREAM.9 (UPDATED)

Bourgas, Bulgaria – DREAM middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi could make his light heavyweight debut on May 25 at DREAM.9 vs. UFC and Affliction veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. originally reported the matchup as being finalized upon hearing the news Friday afternoon from Mousasi’s manager, Apy Echteld. However, additional sources within M-1 Global later informed the site that the Mousasi vs. Sokoudjou fight is still tentative.

Mousasi, 24-2-1, has not competed in an MMA bout since winning the DREAM middleweight Grand Prix after defeating Ronald “Jacare” Souza during the finals on Sept. 23, 2008.

Sokoudjou, 5-4, is currently on a two-fight losing streak that began at UFC 89 against Luiz Cane this past October following a second round TKO. He was defeated in his most recent fight against Renato “Babalu” Sobral during Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” in January.

Talk about a step down in competition .. Even if its at a higher weight class , Sokojoke sucks.

  • Brandon says:

Poor Sokoudjou… can they just allow the guy to heal up his knee and fight lesser competition so that he can work on fine tuning his skills. The guy is still very green and I don’t see him doing very well in this match up.

  • AlwaysRelaxing24 says:

Soko’s Management is horrible. They need to be giving him easier fights to build up his confidence, stamina, and comfortableness. They are throwing him to the wolves.

  • zeke123 says:

I dont want to be ‘that’ guy but Gegard has competed since the DREAM title.

He fought his first K-1 fight and won during DREAM’s huge NYE extravangaza which featured K-1 and MMA fighting.

Mousasi is a true competitor and I was impressed that he would venture into a new arena right after his big title. If he does take part in this years ADCC like Fedor is rumored to also, then the respect level will hit a true plateau.

A real fighter fights no matter the rules.
    Mousasi is a true competitor.

Pancrase, DREAM, UFC, SHOOTO, ADCC, K-1, its all the same thing with different rules, tahts all.

  • Jak says:

I would have to disagree and say that K-1 and MMA are pretty different. That’s like saying boxing and MMA are the same. Or Sambo and MMA are the same.

  • MMA-LOGIC says:

Bad choice of fights for Soku, bad, bad, bad. Even if Soku wins, this is such a risky move at the crossroads in a young career. Its crazy but maybe, just maybe, they know what they are doing.
