Rampage’s surgery leads to Evans vs. Machida headliner at UFC 98 (UPDATED)

Sources have revealed to FiveOuncesOfPain.com on Wednesday morning that former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will undergo undergo surgery to repair damage to his jaw that was sustained in preparation for his UFC 92 bout this past December against Wanderlei Silva.

As a result of the impending surgery, Jackson will be unable to accept a UFC 98 fight against UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans on May 23 in Las Vegas.

With Jackson out of the short-term title picture, sources also revealed to Five Ounces of Pain that UFC officials immediately began to finalize agreements that would enable to company to officially announce that Evans’ first-ever title defense will take place at UFC 98 against undefeated Brazilian sensation Lyoto Machida.

The UFC made the Evans vs. Machida title fight at UFC 98 with an official announcement on its web site late Wednesday evening.

    awww man. I was hoping Rampage was going to bring Evans down.

    I am not so sure about Evans vs Machida… please dont lose Machida, please please.

    This sets the stage for the best two fighters in the division, Evans & Machida, to battle for the championship. I was hoping for this matchup and now, events have conspired to make it so.
