Brian Stann vs. Krzysztof Soszynski scheduled for UFC 97

A bout between former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann and season eight veteran of The Ultimate Fighter Krzysztof Soszynski is scheduled to take place at UFC 97 on April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. first reported on Tuesday that the matchup was possible and has since confirmed from a source close to the fight that an agreement for the bout is set.

Stann has not competed since losing his title to Steve Cantwell at WEC 35 this past August. Despite having previously beaten Cantwell, Stann lost the rematch when he was TKO’d at 4:01 of round 2. The defeat marked the first of his career and dropped his record to 6-1.

Soszynski is 16-8-1 and is a former IFL standout. He made his formal UFC debut during the live finale for TUF 8 last month, where he submitted Shane Primm with a Kimura at 3:27 of round 2.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Stann will have his hands full. His loss to Cantwell proved that’s a bit one dimensional, and Soyszynski has more tools than Cantwell.

  • Bullylover says:

mike Wolfe-agreed. however this is MMA and if Matt serra can knock Gsp out then Cantwell still has a good chance especially since he has a lot of power in that left hand. Another thing is he can take a beating and Still catch you when you are over agressive(Doug Marshall fight).Still this is an interesting matchup. I hope it turns out to be a slugfest.

its too bad we never got to see Stann vs. Cantwell III, but i suppose if we did we would have never seen Cantwell pop out that guys elbow with an armbar.

  • themindone says:

Stann is not ready for Soyszynski or the ufc based on his last fight..

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Stann’s best chance may to be bull rush Soszynski, but that’s dangersous because Soszynski’s a decent wrestler. If the fight goes to the ground, Stann’s in trouble. I really like Stann and admire him on a personal level, but I have to give the edge to Soszynski.

I like Kryzstof but he turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. I feel he’s to slow to hang with Stann, and his striking is not on the same level. He may be decent on the ground but he’s not a BJJ master by any means, anyway I doubt he’s going to go out of his way to get this fight on the ground. I give the edge to Stann, but only a slight one considering Stann’s recent injuries possibly hurting his last training camp. Just think Krzystof might be to willing to trade with Stann, again, bring your attention to his fight with Marshall, even if you catch this guy he’s still a major threat. Cantwell came into the rematch a monster. Looked like he didn’t even go through puberty as a fighter until after Stann gave him a beating, he must of hit the gym hard as hell to come back and dwarf Stann in stature then demolish him with striking in a rematch with a guy that just dominated him and every other serious contender in his weight class in WEC with striking.

  • Bullylover says:

Mike wolfe. You are right Kryyzstof is definately the more well rounded fighter. However he has a tendacy to leave his chin exposed from time to time and that is not something you do with Stann. You still have to give Stann a chance he did train with team quest for a while. If team Quest has one thing they have world class wrestlers & athletes. COME TO THINK ABOUT IT WEREN’T THESE GUY’S FORMER TEAMMATES.That makes for an even more interesting matchup.

  • Bullylover says:

Mike wolfe- I 2 admire Brian Stann and all he’s done for our country. It is nice to discuss MMa and the outcome of fights without having to insult each other and or question each other’s knowledge. I look forward to reading your next blog.

I think Stann has some good stand up, But ufc is the big league’s! You have be a all around fighter. Stann is lacking that,Stoyanski will tko him or submit him in first round! the guy is a beast.
