Report: Demian Maia set to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 95

According to a new report on the official website of Demian Maia, the renowned grappler will next compete inside the UFC’s Octagon on February 21 during UFC 95 against former World Extreme Cagefighting competitor Chael Sonnen.

Maia is quickly earning a reputation as one of the top middleweight fighters in the world by accumulating a perfect 4-0 record since being signed by the UFC. His wins inside the Octagon over Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, and Nate Quarry have allowed the jiu-jitsu black belt to improve his overall MMA record to 9-0.

He will look to keep his perfect record intact against Sonnen, who will be beginning his second tour of duty in the UFC following stints with the WEC and BodogFIGHT.

Sonnen is 21-9-1 and trains out of Matt Lindland’s Team Quest in Portland, Oregon. After recording a unanimous decision victory over former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho at WEC 36 in November, Sonnen improved his record to 7-1 over the course of his last eight fights.

The part-time realtor is getting the opportunity to improve on his lifetime 1-2 record in the UFC after being transferred over from the WEC, which is owned by Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC. Zuffa decided to transfer several of its top middleweight and light heavyweight competitors over to the UFC after discontinuing the WEC’s 185 and 205 pound divisions.

UFC 95 will emanate from the O2 Arena in London, England and will be headlined by the lightweight debut of Diego Sanchez as he takes on former UFC lightweight title challenger Joe Stevenson. Both Sanchez and Stevenson are former winners of The Ultimate Fighter reality television series on Spike TV.

Other reported matchups for UFC 95 include Nathan Marquardt vs. Wilson Gouveia, Junior dos Santos vs. Stefan Struve, Shannon Gugerty vs. Jeff Lawson, and Justin Buchholz vs. Terry Etim.

  • Patrick says:

Awesome, I didn’t even think of this possibility for Maia.

I was sure he’d be put up against Wilson G, completely forgot about Sonnen.

Hopefully this turns out to be more of a war than Sonnen v. Fatty McPsychotic

  • Greg says:

glad to hear …. Sonnen is a great fighter and a class act I hope someday he gets the title shot he deserves after being shafted by Filho for not making weight . congrats Chael now go and kick some ass!

  • ctownhood says:

This is a tough matchup for Maia. If he gets past Sonnen, he’ll be in line for a title shot.

  • Davey D says:

Another great match up made by Mr. Joe Silva. Anderson Silva looks like he could be a very busy man in 2009. Isn’t that great? I’m going to say Maia defeats Sonnen via submission .

  • stevextreme says:

It’s looking like this card is shaping up to be free on Spike. Has anyone heard any truth to a rumor like that?

  • G-DUB says:

Just thinking the same thing steveextreme ….. with that weak headliner, no title fights, and a 3pm live start time, I don’t see any possible way the UFC can package this as a PPV card. Looks like we get a mediocre freebee.

  • Jeremy says:

Rumor has been that it will be on Spike TV. UFC website even said as much, but apparently they are still negotiating that with Spike, so nothing is official. Let’s hope though.

  • JOe K. says:

Its because its in England. They always have weaker cards overseas. See UFC 93 (not the best example), UFC 89, UFC 85, ect…

I think the last one they charged for in spite of the crappy US timeslot. I know for sure UFC 85 was a ppv event (in the US).

I don’t care who else is on the card because Nate Marquardt is going to destroy Gouveia.

  • mike wolfe says:

Sonnen gets thrown in with Maia in his first fight back in the UFC? Wow. Wonder if there’s still some lingering Dana White hostility toward Lindland that’s in play here.

  • Hawkins says:

I wanted the Maia/Bisping fight. Maia called Bisping out. Make it happen

  • chris says:

awesome this is a good match up. ill be rooting for sonnen but i im happy either way.

  • fattyMcPyscho says:

Great matchup, like both fighters, its gonna be a real test for both guys, but I gotta take Maia by decision. Sonnen might have a chance if he doesn’t make a bone-head move like Sonnen/Filho I.
