Lightweight prospect Ronys Torres is the newest addition to the UFC’s lightweight division, according to a report by MMA Weekly.
The report indicates that Torres is expected to make his debut with the promotion in early 2009.
Torres, 14-1, has been profiled in several magazines in recent months and was considered one of the top 155 pound fighters in the world not under contract to Zuffa.
The 23-year old jiu-jitsu black belt trains under Andre Pederneiras at Nova Uniao. Torres began competing professionally in MMA in 2006 and the active fighter already has 15 fights on his resume.
With strong ground and pound skills to complement his slick submissions, Torres has won his last eight fights. His most recent win was a first round submission over Eliene Silva at Jungle Fight 11 in Brazil. However, it was his upset victory at Jungle Fight 10 in July against PRIDE Bushido veteran Luiz Azeredo that caused fight executives in the United States to take notice. Despite being a significant undergo, Torres was able to submit the Chute Boxe veteran with a Kimura at 4:34 of round 1.
