Alistair Overeem confirms New Year’s Eve bout vs. Mirko Cro Cop

Alistair Overeem has confirmed that he will compete against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on New Year’s Eve in a bout to be featured during FEG’s annual “Dynamite!!” event at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The former PRIDE star made the announcement during an exclusive interview with contributing writing Cory Brady that will be appearing later this week.

Overeem, Strikeforce’s current heavyweight champion, fought to a no contest against Cro Cop at DREAM 6 this past September. The match was called to a stop in the first round after Cro Cop was the recipitient of multiple low blows from Overeem and was unable to continue fighting.

The two heavyweights engaged in a great deal of public trash talking leading up to the bout and the manner in which it ended has only added additional fuel to the heated feud.

Overeem has already competed in the wake of the Cro Cop fight, improving his record to 29-11 following a first round submission against Gary Goodridge courtesy of a Kimura during “Glory 10” on November 19 in the Netherlands.

In addition to Overeem vs. Cro Cop II, FEG’s “Dynamite!!” will also bouts between DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen vs. Gesias “J.Z. Calvan” Calvancante in a non-title affair and Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Kiyoshi Tamura. Olympic Judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii, who is now reportedly a contracted FEG fighter, will make an appearance on the show as well.

CroCop wins by brutal knockout, and hopefully knocks some of the arrogance out of Overeem.

  • Rich S. says:

i would LOVE to see CC win this time around..

    i just don’t think it’s possible..

he was outsized, and outclassed in the last bout..

and needs to work on some new things, that will be affective with someone taller..

and he tooks some knees like nobody’s business..

i would really like to see him get a quick KO here, preferably head kick..

    i’ll pull for him,
and i hope he performs differently..

  • Alvis says:

cro cop is mentally deficient now afetr being ko’ed – he’s afraid of being knacked oot again. gonzaga stylee. he never looked the same after winning the hwgp06. looked smaller too. maybe he’s gonna hulk up for NYE ?

  • King Solomon says:

  • Slodren says:

After last insults from overeem that CC is avoiding fight with him Cro Cop said:

So it does not look like I fear him, Overeem will have to wait for the New Year or some other date in the next year to fight me. If he doesn’t believe me that I’m not the person who chooses my opponents and that my organisation “Dream” does not want us to enter the ring on New Year’s, I invite him to come to Zagreb the following weekend and we will fight in my ring, with neutral referees. We will also organise accommodation for him and his team and the local television will broadcast the fight live which will be able to seen throughout the world on the Internet.
Cro Cop added he wanted to stop the media squabbles and that the two men should solve their differences in the ring. Mirko, thus, threw the gauntlet and it is up to Overeem to prove if he as the courage or just likes to talk.

    – If Overeem does not turn up on Saturday, December 6, in my hall in Zagreb, let him not even mention me until our next duel. He has the opportunity to put his fist where his mouth is in a match that will not be paid. We will fight for honour, so let everybody stand behind their own words – Filipovic said.

If Overeem agrees to the match, it will be a true spectacle and Mirko will have to show that he can still fight.
