Report: Vitor Belfort off Affliction’s Oct. 11 show

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio informed on Thursday that former UFC light heavyweight champion and current middleweight competitor Vitor Belfort has pulled out of his previously scheduled Oct. 11 bout against Matt Lindland due to a hand injury.

Belfort is the second top fighter to pull off of “Day of Reckoning” due to a hand injury, as WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko was unable to move forward on a possible title defense against Andrei Arlovski due to a lingering hand injury of his own.

As of now, Lindland is still believed to be on the card but without an opponent. There has been some speculation that EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields has been offered an opportunity to fight Lindland on the show. While Atencio expressed to MMA Weekly that Affliction has admiration for his ability, he was quick to point out that Shields is currently under contract to another organization.

It should be note that Affliction did pursue one other fighter under contract to EliteXC. Sources informed earlier this week that Affliction officials had been interested in putting together a featherweight bout at “Day of Reckoning” between Mark Hominick and Bao Quach.

It was determined that Quach’s limited non-exclusive would prevent him from competing on the Affliction show and a 140 lbs. title match between him and Wilson Reis on Sept. 20 was finalized on Thursday.

“Day of Reckoning” is scheduled to be headlined by a battle of former UFC heavyweight champions Arlovski and Josh Barnett fighting for a title shot against Emelianenko. Heavyweight bouts between Ben Rothwell vs. Pedro Rizzo and Paul Buentello vs. Roy Nelson are expected as well a light heavyweight contest between Vladimir Matyushenko and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

I’m not sure I’m going to shell out the money just to watch 2 … maybe 3 fights. Only fights here that are interesting at this point to me are: Barnett/Arlovski, Matyushenko/Lil’Nog, Horodecki/Fighter X… just not sure it’s worth it, especially if I have to sit through some sort of megadeath affliction bullshit during the show on top of it all.

This just might be the leverage Tito needs to get more money than he’s worth.

man I wanted this fight. Fortunately they have many others I am interested in.

Suprise, suprise… the USS Affliction is sprouting leaks…I’m sure there’s another UFC cast-off they can locate who was cut for losing one too many, who will love to go on record and talk about how well he is finally being treated and that he wants a shot at the WAMMA undisputed (hehehe) title. These are Good times for sure:-)

  • Nate says:

    1) ufc castoff? where else are fighters going to come from, they bought pride and IFL, so there arent any other organizations that have been around long enough.
    2) Looked at any top HW lists lately? There Affliction has almost everyone on that list except Big Nogueria.
… Add some thought & try again.

  • stevefiji says:

Look again at what you said on your first premise, your argument backed up what i said, so why try again? to double your pain?
And to your second point,…well, have you ever heard of the expression ‘out with old, in with the new?’ … AA by the time he left was fighting on UFC undercards, Sylvia is 8 and 7 in his last 15 fights, Barnett is just plain overrated, and Rizzo and Rothwell are well past their ‘used by” date….

Carwin, Velasquez, Lesnar, and Mir…. young, super athletic and the next generation MMA’ers who would kick every ass on the Affliction’s rooster’s in 2 years with the exception of Fedor. Add in Nog and Werdum and GG and even Capt’n America…and I’ll take that against Afflicition in 2 years any time, any day, any where. That’s investment in the future not living in the past and milking a drying up old cow.

  • Gman says:

The two best Heavies in the World are Fedor and Couture/Plain and simple U don’t have to be a Fuckin genuis to figure that out.
