Werdum says he has new five fight contract with UFC

With one fight remaining on his current contract, heavyweight title contender Fabricio Werdum has revealed to the Brazilian website Tatame that he has already signed a five-fight contract extension with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Werdum, a former PRIDE standout, is 2-1 since entering the UFC and is expected to complete his current four-fight contract at UFC 90 on Oct. 25 in Chicago. A deal for his next opponent has not be finalized but Werdum gave indications that he could fight the debuting Junior Cigano.

With a win at UFC 90, Werdum gives a strong indication that the first fight on his contract would likely be for the UFC heavyweight title. Interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir are expected to be fighting on Dec. 27 in Las Vegas and Werdum would be in line to face the winner if he can improve his UFC record to 3-1.

The also gives the impression that Werdum is pulling for Nogueira to win so that the two can have a rematch from their 2006 encounter in PRIDE in which Werdum lost to Nogueira via a unanimous decision.

  • BJJDenver says:

I really would like to see Werdum/Nog!

  • steve24 says:

A early stoppage with Vera, a win over a UFC newbie and you get a title shot?

  • Joseph says:

No one in the UFC as a HW deserves a title shot…LOL.
You should just be glad Lesnar is not getting one yet.

Hell get one if he beats Herring or whenver he gets a win in the UFC…hahaha.

  • matt says:

Do you honestly believe that was an early stoppage? Vera had no answer to the mount and wasn’t strong enough to buck him off. He also stopped Gonzaga. So he had 2 top wins against ranked competition. And both were very convincing.

  • doubleA-ron says:

just another person who wont let go of the fact vera is
if vera was affliction then they would make money because i will admit if vera can sell himself he can sell anything

  • Kernal44 says:

At least they are finally realizing they need to sign their HW’s to longer contracts now, rather than letting them leave to the competition. I would have hated to see him leave to Affliction and get paid $600,000 for a fight.

  • Mike C. says:

Werdum probably deserves a shot as much as anyone else in the HW division.

  • BJJDenver says:

Agree on the early stoppage, but the outcome was inevitable.

Say what you will about Werdum being deserving or not, but who deserves it more? And what match up would be more interesting than 2 of the best bjj adapted to mma guys?

  • BJJDenver says:

One more thing, that stoppage was probably as bad for Werdum as it was for Vera, maybe even worse. Vera dropped to lhw, where he has more of a future, but Werdum now gets knocked for the stoppage.

  • Matt says:

    “The also gives the impression”
Come on Sammy boy, we know you’re better than that. 😛

  • batman says:

There was almost more Heavyweights on the affliction card then the entire UFC heavyweight roster. lol

  • DamonO says:

    Mike C.

Dude you are so right. Let’s ponder the heavy weight division in the UFC. Who do you have?

Gabriel Gonzaga on a one win streak (Justin McCully)
Cheick Kongo lost his last fight (Heath Herring)
Fabricio Werdum won last two (Gonzaga, Vera)
Shane Carwin won last two (Wellisch, Carlton Jones) Jones win in 2006
Mark Coleman (ummm….we all know this situation here)
Antoni Hardonk won last two (Sanchez, Colin Robinson)
Heath Herring one win streak (Kongo)
Brock Lesnar (blah blah we’ll see)
Justin McCully lost his last fight (Gonzaga)
Brad Morris lost his last and only UFC fight (Velasquez)
Frank Mir won last two (Lesnar, Hardonk)
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira won last two (Sylvia, Herring)
Jake O’Brien lost his last two (Velasquez, Arlovski)
Eddie Sanchez lost his last fight (Hardonk)
Cain Velasquez won his last two (O’Brien, Morris)
Christian Wellisch lost his last fight (Carwin)

Take your pick of who gets the shot. Not a whole lot of decisiveness there in that division.

The Heavyweights that fought on the Affliction card are Affliction’s Heavyweight roster.

  • batman says:

Well anyway when yo have 180 guys under contract and you can count all the heavyweight fighters on both hands, then you know someone isn’t doing their job right. Just a tought to ponder, and I realize I am exagerating a bit.

  • batman says:

“thought” I mean. also it’s “exaggerating” oops.

  • batman says:

and I misspelled “you” rough day.

  • Warcry says:

Give me a Shoto Boxe guy anyday. Now you have 2 who could potentially collide if both Nogueira and Werdum win their next fight is all you can ask for from a listless heavyweight division.
