Report: Fedor vs. Arlovski might happen on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas

Coming off the heels of its first-ever show this past Saturday, Affliction will promote its second MMA on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center according to a report by Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole.

According to Iole, Fedor Emelianenko will defend his WAMMA heavyweight title against Andrei Arlovski in the night’s main event.

Iole indicated that Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio was unavailable for comment but quoted Thomas & Mack Center director Daren Libonati as a source for his report.

Fedor claimed the then-vacant WAMMA heavyweight title from Tim Sylvia during this past Saturday’s “Banned” event in Anaheim following a submission just 36 seconds into round 1.

Arlovski was victorious on the card as well, knocking out former IFL heavyweight Ben Rothwell in the third round.

  • Ian says:

I won’t complain about seeing Fedor twice in 4 months against top Competition, but I was hoping it would be Barnett.

I’m guessing this means the Couture camp doesn’t think they’ll be free and clear in time for a November fight.

  • neijia says:

Barnett might be able to get lucky with a punch. Arlovski seems too stuck in boxing range, similar to Big Nog. He was a junior champ in sambo, though, lol, as if that means something against Fedor.

  • Matt says:

Everyone I’ve talked to wants Barnett, but in my opinion Andrei looked more impressive than Barnett, and against a higher calibre opponent.
Plus Barnett has been dodging Fedor for years.

  • ranger1071 says:

I’m willing to bet they try and put another solid HW in front of Barnett to build him up a little bit more with the casual MMA fan, just like that is why they are putting Fedor/AA together. All the UFC and casual fans know Arlovski and Sylvia, not many of them know Fedor. Now if Fedor walks through both he’s going to have the hype surrounding his name in the US potentially on par with his talent. If Barnett walks through his next guy too, it’s a similar situation.

What I’m interested to see is what happens if Affliction’s 3rd card is Josh/Fedor, where will Affliction go from there?

  • Echolocating says:

    My guess would be Couture.

I really wanted to see Fedor fight Arlovski next so this is great news. I don’t expect Arlovski to win, but we’re guaranteed it’ll go past the first minute. Arlovski’s too squirrelly to walk into a flurry of unanswered punches to the face. 😉

  • Dave says:

This is a big mistake. At this point Fedor looks as good to the casual fan as he ever will. Affliction shouldn’t use him again until they can promote Fedor/Randy. If it takes a while, wait. The financial result would be worth it. And by the way, Fedor/Randy is the only match Affliction can put on that will bail them out financially in one night. Otherwise they’ll be standing on that ledge for a while…

  • Matt says:

“At this point Fedor looks as good to the casual fan as he ever will. ”
No he doesn’t. Not enough “casual” fans saw the event.

  • Evan says:

I dunno Dave…I think a lot of people have lost interest and are much more fired up by watching the Fedor and Arlovski fight after their RECENT dominating performances. Strike while the irons hot and Fedor vs Randy has been so long in the making it can wait, especially since nobody is sure it can happen.

  • DamonO says:

Randy’s got to fight somebody! Holy crap! There were talks about Fedor fighting Barnett, then Randy stepped into the ring with Fedor talking about a possible matchup between those two, now it’s Arlovski. Get your shit together Affliction. It sounds like someone needs to keep their mouth shut until they have a definite answer to what is happening next for this new organization. Sorry, just frustrated. I just want to see Fedor vs. Couture already. How long can you hype this up? People are going to lose interest. These guys will be fighting the new MMA stye of wheelchair jiu jitsu before too long. Their old hollow bones breaking against one another as they turn into dust right in the ring.

  • Dave… Do you know Afflictions financial figures?
Last I heard Donald Trump had their back…

They are going to put Fedor against all the former UFC guys just to stick it to Dana.
At this point I dont think Randy is going to give Fedor any problems.

I wouldnt mind seeing Anderson Silva fight Fedor…. 220 vs 230 thats a fair fight.

  • Evan says:

“Last I heard Donald Trump had their back… ”

Yeah but rich men are kinda into making money and he isn’t going to be in this to lose money. This MMA thing is probably nothing to him maybe 1 of 500 things he is involved with right now…he probably has more money invested in any of a dozen golf course than this….I’m sure he would pull the plug and probably forget he was ever a part of it until someone brought it up again.

By the way…”Trump: The Art of the Deal ” is a really good autobiography. Its not so much about money making as it is about him going broke, becoming rich again and having revenge on those who abandoned him. This was written well before he went Hollywood.

  • Chris Lyons says:

I hear Tito Ortiz vs. Babalou is on it’s way.

  • tomk says:

October 11th? I can’t wait to see what the UFC has planned for that night…

  • Matt says:

Did Affliction: Banned not make money, Evan? And it’s natural to assume that their next card will have a smaller price in fighter salaries, and make more at the gate and PPV.

  • Evan says:

“Did Affliction: Banned not make money”

Nobody knows that right now. I was simply referring to the point that since Trump got involved people seem to take that as an endless supply of cash.

  • J-Hawker says:

I was hoping for Barnett too but on reading these comments,AA does make more sense and should draw more attention than Fedor-Timmy did or Barnett at this point.

  • stevefiji says:

This was an obvious match-up…. Barnett can’t sell tickets njo matter how much he tries to sound like he’s from the hood for shizzle, and it does makes Fedor even more marketable when he beats up on AA. Then you have Barnett in line and a 4th and final decent fight for Fedor with Randy if he ever gets clear. Then repeat the cycle, wash and rinse again, because that’s all she wrote for Affliction, unless Tito wants to get his ass kicked by the Russian Teddy Bear.

But you never know, Fedor has 3 fights… maybe Dana scops him up after the Barnett fight and he thanks the T-Shirt guy for the efforts and has him fight Randy under his umbrella. Bada Bing!

  • Davey D says:

Sweet. This is good news to me. I still think Affliction may have jumped the gun bring Randy out but you can’t really blame them either. They had a prefect platform for everyone there to show support for the cause on broadcast television. They took a chance to see what everyone thought about it and now a lot of people thinking who’s next for Fedor? There are 3 possible contender’s. I feel a Couture/Fedor bout can wait for now.

I think once they’ve done three show’s. The brass there will know if this promoting stuff is what they want to persue. They have a lot backing from a lot of different sources. If the card’s are played right, other org’s would be smart to do business with Affliction.

I said the other day I’d like to see AA vs. Fedor next. Andrei will give Fedor a good fight I believe. He would last a round or two, maybe. My money would be on Fedor to win though. I also think their bout would sell better in America than Barnett vs. Emelainenko. Japan would be the perfect place to hold that bout. It would be a risk for Affliction to do it alone but if they had Dream’s help. Big thing’s could happen.

If Fedor wins against Andrei and Randy is clear to fight by February. Couture has the better drawing power then Barnett in the States so Josh might have to wait even longer.

I’d like to see Fedor defeat all three. Then fight Minotauro in the UFC. He could very, very well replace Nogueira again and carve his legacy out all over again. A fourth bout between those two would be excellent. Detroit, Michigan would be the prefect spot.

  • detroit_fan says:

Barnett would be my first choice, but i won’t complain about an AA v. Fedor fight.

  • Joey says:

If Fedor fought Arlovski, Couture, and Barnett in one night . . . ala Geroge Foreman fighting five people in one night to prove he was a bad ass, after he lost to Ali. Maybe, just maybe, one of them would win.

  • Rich S. says:

    call me crazy..
    but i love this..

  • Davey D says:

I wonder how the UFC is going to counter this event? Maybe they’ll replay a current PPV and UFN or perhaps an all day marathon on Spike TV? They could also do something with the WEC on Versus? Throw in a couple TapouT show’s with it. Something will happen. They’ll start planning for October 11th today.

  • ANBUsquad says:

I expected this, after the Fedor-Sylvia fight… I expect also to see Fedor vs. Josh barnett on New Year’s eve in Japan. It’s already a tradition to hold a MMA event in Japan on New Year’s eve. Josh is very popular with the Japanese fans. Of course Fedor also. I expect a Randy Couture vs. Fedor fight early next year. I think Fedor will still win, BUT, Andre will make life harder for him. I think, it Fedor will win by strikes again, on the 2nd or third round. But I expect Andre to give Fedor a cut, maybe above the left eye : ), I think there will be blood, and you will see Fedor angry, like you seen him in the Fujita and Mark Hunt fights. Andre Arlovski will not be a walk in the park for Fedor. But Fedor will still win. I’m sure of it. It’s a good fight. I’m looking forward to it.

  • ANBUsquad says:

I also want to see Fedor fight against Fabricio Werdum and Frank Mir, maybe also Congo and Napao Gonzaga… hehehe, 2 jui jitsu master, and 2 frightening strikers… let’s if fedor is the best. I would realyy want to see him fight these guys. If he wins… everybody should shut up, and reconignize the King…

  • dpk says:

This was very smart, scheduling a card in early October, UFC already has 2 cards in September (88, UFN15), and 89 and 90 on tap for the end of October, so I don’t think UFC will be able to come up with something live to go head to head with it, unless they start shifting fights around.

Affliction has 3 more interesting fights for Fedor – AA/Randy/Barnett, and if Fedor does what Fedor does (which is destroy people) then he is going to be a free agent again, and the only place left for him will be UFC, and that negotoation should go very well for him (Yeah, I’ve beaten your current champ twice (If Nog is still the champ), and I just ran through 4 of your most recent champs.

  • Stickney says:

They should do this card in Chicago vs the UFC AA will sell tickets in his home town

  • BoRocker says:

    This makes perfect sense.

The vast majority of MMA fans (casual and hardcore) knew Tim and most watched (or at least heard about) the Azz kicking. Tim was never beaten that way before…at least not so quickly.

Now IMO Affliction has set Fedor up with another MMA/UFC household name and I have to believe that they (Affliction) are looking for Fedor to decimate the Pitbull in a similar fashion.

If this happens it’s the perfect set up for Randy “Captain America” Couture to come in and “save the day”. Huge hype….HUGE PPV numbers. It makes sense.

  • steelbus287 says:

I heard GSP and BJ Penn are going to move up in weight class to fight Fedor.

  • Matt C. says:

#27 makes a really good point. MMA was recently green-lighted in Ill and the UFC is headed to Chicago for UFC 90. It would be a nice coup for Affliction to host a show before the UFC gets chance to. Having it in AA’s hometown would put asses in seats as well as get a big portion of the crowd cheering for AA. When Fedor beats him, it could create that much more of an illusion of the ‘unbeatable’ Fedor…

  • Jay K. says:

Chicago is a great opportunity for both the UFC and Affliction!

The UFC has struck first with the Allstate Arena (seating capacity 20K) which is located in Rosemont, IL, (right next to O’Hare Airport and about 30 min. from the heart of downtown).

Affliction would be wise to counter the UFC by booking the United Center (also seating capacity 20K) where the Chicago Blackhawks/Bulls play. The United Center is located in the “West Loop”. The advantage is that the United Center is a 5 min. walk to the heart of Downtown and afterparties would be easy to get to rather than a drive downtown from the Allstate Arena.

In summary, Chicago is more than ready to host an event!

    Jay K.

  • Jay K. says:

Forgot. AA > FE. Go Arlovski!

  • Sergio G. Hernandez says:

“Tim was never beaten that way before…at least not so quickly.”

It took Arlovski only about 10 more seconds than Fedor to beat Sylvia the first time around.

  • Sergio G. Hernandez says:

Oh, just as a completely unrelated sidenote:

On IFL’s website, Roy Nelson has his Top 10 HWs ranked and has himself ranked #5 over Sylvia, Arlovski, AND Rothwell who he lost to last year.

    Haha, talk about delusional.

If Affliction sees Barnett/Fedor as its biggest match up, it makes sense to have Arlovski fight Fedor first. That would help build momentum for Barnett/Fedor. On the other hand, I’d rather see Arlovski fight somebody else before Fedor. Arlovski was tentative in his last fights in UFC, possibly because of his losses to Sylvia, and a crushing loss to Fedor might wreck his head again.

Rich I couldn’t agree more. Maybe we’re the few that think The Pitbull can win. It’ll be no easy feat for Andrei for sure, but I think the heavy, and very fast too, hands of Arlovski will prove tough for Fedor to counter-strike against in return. Andrei’s hands are very lethal, I mean look @ what they’ve done to Sylvia in the past(ala one right cross to knock dwn a 6’8″ 260 lbs giant). Not to mention the pummeling Rothwell took too, didn’t u love the blood splattered on the camera lens for that fight? On the ground it can be dangerous for Arlovski, even w/the highly skilled Sambo as Fedor is a Sambo master himself. I think to better prep himself for this bout, Andrei’s gonna have to improve the ground game a lot more. As far as the stand up exchange, I got Andrei over Fedor w/the hand power & speed as well as the footwork. Face it, Andrei is light on his feet w/some very hard & fast kicking legs. Not to mention good clinch wk w/some nice knees, where the long legs come in handy! Can I get an AMEN?

  • glenrod says:

it almost seems to me that people still arent recognising king fedor as the undisputed mma champ.just like the night i saw him fight big timmy there was loads of people saying timmy,s jab is too much for fedor, fedor hasnt fought anyone at timmy,s level etc.36 seconds he made him look like a chump.he made the ex ufc heavyweight champ look like a little baby. i dont want to hear this crap about aa posing any kind of threat to fedor.its all bullshit.josh barnett would have the best chance against him but would still lose.i cant believe that certain people need him to beat randy before they recognise fedor as king.since when has randy been the king anyway?. i saw a repeat of aa vs big timmy in the ufc and big timmy knocked out aa and joe rogan said -bring on your fedor now.lolololololololololololololol. now i,m sure theres a ufc nuthugger out there who is gonna say something stupid about my your worst.

  • Trevor says:

This is one fight I have wondered about for some time! I think it’s a good matchup style wise, and it will be a good test for fedor! I still think fedor will pull of the win. After seeing the randelman fight, watching him get dumped on his neck and then pulling off the win, i thought that’s ” One tough f*#@ing guy “. The dream fight I would like to see would be FEDOR EMILIANENKO vs SERGEI KHARITONOV? Anybody else agree?
