UFC 89 could air on Spike TV (UPDATED)

Dave Meltzer’s newsletter reports that October 18th’s UFC 89 from Birmingham, England will air on Spike TV. After a main event of Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben was announced many fans were assuming the card would air for free and now it appears to be confirmed.

  • Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben
  • Diego Sanchez vs Thiago Alves

The card is also set to feature the UFC debut of UK standout Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy.

Update: FiveOuncesOfPain.com’s Sam Caplan has spoken with a source that has indicated that the deal for UFC 89 to be televised on Spike TV is not yet official. However, the source indicated that a deal is considered a “strong possibility.”

Is this a surprise? I dare them to make that a PPV they would not even get 20K buys…Cards like this is why competition is good for the MMA landscape…if there is one major player you get stuck watching crap cards like this at 2 p.m.

  • Bad Monkey says:

This is already shaping up to be a good card! If Diego comes out against Alves like he did against Luigi that will be a fucking war. Can’t wait.

  • Tag01 says:

Crap like this? If all you care about is star power, then this isn’t for you. But if you like good fights, this show is going to be great. Diego vs. Alves is Crap? Seriously? And Leben vs. Bisping is going to be exciting as hell, not to mention the potential title ramifications of both fights. Can’t wait.

It’s great for a free card; it’s crap for the $55 that my cable company will charge. Bisping is not a headliner neither is Diego.

  • Lippo says:

With all due respect, I hope we don’t have Marcus Davis on the card again. He’s a great fighter but he’s been in most UK cards recently and we could do with someone else for a change.

i agree with #3, although this card is lacking that big name fight, both the leben vs. bisping and alves vs sanchez could easily make a run for fight of the year. should be some exciting fights.

This card is still over 3 months away, I still wouldn’t be surprised to see another big time fight added to this card. Right now it isn’t a pay per view, but if Anderson Silva v Okami is added, then it becomes a great card.

    Fantastic!

The real reason is that a PPV would also be unpopular is that due to the time zone situation the fights would be on at a very abnormal US time.

If you remember, another UFC event was free from England for the same reason, I believe it was when Bisping fought Elvis Sinosec.

People love 2 complain. This could have the bestb fights you will ever see you don’t know untill u watch it. I have been to local shows tha have been excellent and the only big name they had was K-Flo and he was in the audience not fighting. I fu think the card sucks then don’t watch it.
