5 Oz. Exclusive: Joachim Hansen added to DREAM.5

joachim_hansen.jpg has learned through an unnamed source that Joachim “Hellboy” Hansen is expected to fight at DREAM.5 on Monday, July 21 in a Lightweight Grand Prix tournament reserve match.

While an opponent has not been confirmed for Hansen, sources have also indicated that he is likely to face Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill.

DREAM.5 is scheduled to emanate from Osaka, Japan at Osakajo Hall and will feature the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix Semifinals and Finals. Semifinal matchups between Shinya Aoki vs. Caol Uno and Eddie Alvarez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri have been set, with the winners of each bout fighting each other the same night in the tournament final.

As the tournament’s reserve match, the winner of the expected Hansen vs. Gill matchup would likely move onto the final in the event that a semifinal winner was injured and unable to continue.

Hansen, 17-7-1, according to Sherdog’s fight finder, was eliminated from the tournament after dropping a unanimous decision to Alvarez during the Grand Prix’s second round at DREAM.3 on May 11, in what many critics consider to be a candidate for “Fight of the Year.” Hansen advanced past the first round at DREAM.1 this past March when he recorded a unanimous decision over Kotetsu Boku.

Gill is 9-7 according to Sherdog and was eliminated from the first round of the tournament after losing in a unanimous decision to current semifinalist Kawajiri. In addition to DREAM, Gill has also competed for K-1 HERO’s, BodogFIGHT, Shooto and TKO.

In addition to the completion of the Lightweight Grand Prix, a non-tournament match between Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto and Joe Benavidez is also planned for DREAM.5. Middleweights Yoshihiro Akiyama and Denis Kang are rumored for the card as well, in separate bouts.

The Japanese love them some Joachim Hansen and they’ll do what it takes to get him on a card. Get ’em, Hellboy!

  • bjjdenver says:

Awesome. Isn’t CroCop expected on this card as well?

Why do they have this on a Monday (or late Sunday, not sure of the time)??

  • jj says:

I can’t wait to see Joachim again, his grappling was crazy last time which was a big suprise.

  • jackson187 says:

Good job DREAM. I like how they put up a reserve fight with deserving combatants instead of fill-the-void flunkies. Definitely adds to the watchability of the card.

  • Ryder Die says:

Hansen will fill in nicely but will you really get a true winner if you place the winner of Hansen vs. Gill in the final in case of emergency? That does not show the tournaments best fighter of the tournament. I just dont like the idea of fighting twice in the same day. And yes I know that is the old fashioned , traditional way that it was done but I just dont like it in this capacity. It is entertaining to watch Hansen and Gill fight.

  • ttt says:

Joe Benavidez is 7-0 on the Fight Finder but is there anything else anyone knows about him or is he just being fed to Kid?

  • sprewell says:

Hansen being on this card has been known for almost 2 weeks.

and to #5: tournament reserve fights don’t work like that.

The chain goes like this: if a bout winner cannot continue, the loser of that bout is asked first to replace him. If that fighter declines, they ask the loser of the other bout. If he declines, then the reserve bout winner is slotted in.

  • Patrick says:

I really dig Dream, I’ve pretty much put Dream and the UFC on par for my viewing pleasure… I enjoy both pretty much at the same level now haha.

  • Skwirrl says:

ttt Benavidez is Faber’s best student and according to him can work over anybody at the gym with weight being no consideration. Some pretty decent fighters come through Ultimate Fitness so he must at least show alot of promise.

  • hody says:

hellboy hansen is a machine and i cant wait to see him fight again. thank god for HDNet!!!!

    This dude is a bad-ass.
