AFL still interested in Kim Couture

In spite of suffering a loss during her recent professional MMA debut, Kim Couture is still drawing the interest of the American Fight League.

Couture dropped a unanimous decision to Kim Rose last Friday in Las Vegas competing for Banner Promotions’ “Night of Combat” at the Thomas and Mack Center. During the early stages of the fight, Couture suffered a broken jaw and is believed to have suffered a broken nose at one point as well.

The AFL, which recently signed former BodogFIGHT women’s champion Tara LaRosa, had offered Couture a contract before the fight and has made it clear that an offer is still on the table.

“The AFL is still very much interested in signing Kim Couture,” AFL CEO B.J. Santiago is quoted as saying in a press release issued by the promotion. “We would be honored to have her on board.

“Kim had a tough loss in Las Vegas but she proved to the world that she’s got a fighter’s heart,” said Santiago. “Despite suffering a broken jaw on the first punch in the first round she fought like a lion and just kept going. The tenacity she displayed in the ring was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

    This reeks of the WNBA.

  • woooburn says:

evidently she is claiming she was attempting to touch gloves when she got hit with the shot that broke her jaw. doesnt seem clear in the video, but i guess it is a weird angle.

still think her corner or the ref mustve had some indication that she was severely injured. i have no problem with women’s mma… i just feel like a jaw broken in two places, regardless of the fighters gender and experience level, is grounds for a stoppage, no matter what the circumstances. i have to hand it to her for fighting through it, but there would have been no shame in ending it when that happened.

  • Sven says:

To me it sounds extremely dangerous to continue with a completely broken jaw. This would normally lead to a stop in modern mma, right? (If the ref knows, that is, I guess he didn’t in this case.)

  • Davey D says:

I seen a picture of the fight on Sherdog. The first shot has Kim getting blasted and it looks like she goes limp while standing up. You can clearly see that the punch rocked her. That may be the punch that broke her jaw.

Props to Mrs. Couture for staying tough and sticking it out. Way to go!

If the AFL becomes the WNBA of MMA, that’s fine with me. Women are fighter’s too and should a have a place to compete at the highest of level’s. If the AFL decides to have both female and male competitor’s, so be it. Even if their women’s divison out shines the male divison.

Again, the women need a place to compete. Hopefully they can sign “Mega Megu” Fujii down the line. It would be very good to see her compete in America.

If they pay Kim Couture $500,000, they’ll get 250,000 PPV buys! Go for it AFL!

  • Banter says:

I hope they have a lock solid contract ready…

  • MJC_123 says:

Of course they are….She is Randy’s missus.
Hence they believe they get the Randy airtime to boot.
She could never have thrown a punch in her life and someone would try sign her up hopin to get on the Randy gravy train…

Actually maybe thats how Dana should lure him back….

  • HexRei says:

@#5 Not sure if you were intentionally wildly exaggerating, but I seriously doubt her asking price is even a tenth of that. I don’t think she’s hurting for money given that she is VP of Xtreme Couture and married to Randy and her fight decisions will probably be dictated by what’s good for her career, not how much she can squeeze out of a minor promotion like AFL.

We saw what happened when women’s basketball had 2 pro leagues at the same time.

Other than the possibility of watching someone like Gina Carano, what’s the appeal?

  • Rich S. says:

i definitely have a new respect for Kim.

There’s plenty of GUYS that would’ve just quit.. or told his team in between rounds..

i can’t believe this though.. THE VERY FIRST PUNCH broke her jaw.. and she went the next three rounds getting punched in the face.. and she was in a few guillotines that HAD TO HAVE BEEN straining her jaw..

    she’s a true warrior..

and i was impressed with her clinched knees and her ability to get the fight to the ground.. but.. she didn’t do ANYTHING once it hit the ground.. she just tied up.. which, is the last thing she wanted.. and.. she didn’t block a SINGLE punch throughout the entire fight.. so.. that’s something to work on..

  • kingiefella says:

all i can say is wow…first punch in the fight huh? I take my hat off to kim as kim is proud of Randy he should be very proud of kim……get the best contract you can kim…you deserve it!

  • Michaelthebox says:

Hexrai, it was a reference to Tara LaRosa’s insane AFL contract (500,000 over 2 years) and AFL’s insane PPV expectations (150,000 buys by fall).

All signs point to AFL being run by idiots.

  • darkmetal says:

Sure she didn’t quit, but considering her performance she should have.
The poor girl did little more than take down her opponent and lay on top of her for the most part. She even seemed to take more punches from the bottom. On the other hand, “li’l pitbull” Rose, lived up to her name with flurries of punches from those short arms. Couture seemed to simply put her hands out aimlessly and almost close her eyes during the exchanges.

I would hate to think what even more advanced female MMA fighters would do to Kim Couture. In Japan she would probably wouldn’t last long.
