Report: Anderson Silva to debut at light heavyweight during July 19 Spike TV special

Plans remain in motion for a live UFC special on Spike TV scheduled for July 19. According to Ariel Helwani of, the main event for the show will feature the debut of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at light heavyweight. The site is reporting that Silva’s debut at 205 pounds will come against James Irvin. reported on Monday that a light heavyweight main event consisting of Wanderlei Silva vs. Brandon Vera had been on the table. However, recent indications are that Silva declined the bout because it was on such short notice.

The UFC is believed to be looking to run a show on such short notice as a way to counter-program Affliction’s inaugural MMA show the same night on pay-per-view.

  • brett says:

so what happens if silva loses?

  • Jason Brewer says:

I better never hear a UFC fan say that Japanese MMA is a circus because with Brock Lesnar and this bullshit (Silva going up in weight on short notice) the UFC is becoming the Kings of the Big Top….

  • ak47 says:

    Thank god for DVR.

  • johnnyrev says:

“The UFC is believed to be looking to run a show on such short notice as a way to counter-program Affliction’s inaugural MMA show the same night on pay-per-view.”

well putting the baddest man alive on TV for free would def. do it ….Gotta love the UFC ….this summer is rocking with great FREE MMA …we are very lucky to live in such times

  • JacRabbit says:

    Amen #3

  • Paul Balsom says:

I’m the biggest A. Silva mark ever…. “i’m freakin’ out man.”

  • Ian says:

    Dear Dana,

I’ll still be watching the Affliction Card.

    Knowledgeable MMA Fan

    Dear Dana,

    Bleating Sheep

  • Popetastic says:

Yeah, OK. I think the Affliction card is cool, too. But that doesn’t mean this freebie isn’t going to be good. If this rumor is true, the best fighter in the world will be fighting on July 19. And it isn’t Fedor.

  • Erik W. says:

    Dear Ian,

Or you could stop being an elitist dick and watch both.

  • Cobra Kai says:

This is a bad move for Silva. One of the biggest things going for him is the fact that he has so much confidence in himself, and is mentally focused. If he gets caught by Irvin, and is brutally knocked out, it could affect his performance at even 185. There is a lot more to the mental aspect of fighting than people give credit. If he was taking time to prepare, and gain some weight I would not think it was a bad decision but moving up on short notice is not a good idea for someone who is considered unbeatable by a lot of people.

  • Bill Lumberg says:

Can we please wait and see how much this affliction PPV is going to be first. No way in hell am I paying $75 to see Tim “Bore me to death” Sylvia fight. I will glady watch the free UFC card and download the Affliction fights.

  • The Legend says:

A couple things 1) I thought Irvin was mulling a move to MW so why not do it at MW, 2) Does this mean that Silva/Okami is off in October? 3) Does Silva have to forfeit his title?

  • ACanadianPotHead says:

    Great match up.

I wonder why they didnt offer Vera to Silva? Maybe they still have him lined up for someone else.

Who is Karo fighting at 87? I say Anthony Johnson. Do it.

Hey UFC, I just got laid off, I bet Joe Silva could use an assisstant!!!

  • Sergio G. Hernandez says:

Jason, you don’t make any sense.

How is hiring a national champion collegiate wrestler and NOT feeding him a natural middleweight (coughWandycough) make UFC a circus?

How is having your 185 champion, arguably the best fighter in the game right now, move up in weight to challenge himself against a new slew of opponents bullshit?

  • Silva should handle Irvin EASY.
Its a good match for Silva (big 185) vs Irvin (small 205)

Silva loses he still can go back to Middleweight as champ
Irvin wins he looks like a contender for the 205 belt

I appreciate the UFC giving us a free show but I am still going to watch the Affliction show first….

  • Ian says:

I actually will be watching both. The UFC puts on a good show. I also know there’s room for more than one organization and fully support Affliction’s effort in putting on a good card.

Which is more than I can say for a whole lot of people who go around parroting Dana White sound bite’s. That’s who my comment was directed at.

  • Rich S. says:

    Dang it, Anderson!
i don’t see what’s so wrong with dominating one weight class, and staying there.. These guys like Anderson and BJ just get so anxious, and feel like they have to move up.. I mean, Anderson shouldn’t have a problem handling his own at LHW, especially w/ Irvin.. but.. idk.. i just don’t like this move.. Cobra Kai’s right.. i mean, what if we see anderson become the next Andrei Arlovski.. you know, he suffers a devistating KO and never fights the same again.. that would suck, especially for a man like Anderson, that, as previously mentioned, seems invicible to many people..

  • HexRei says:

@#10 I’m not sure Silva is the type of guy who needs to do an intense lengthy training camp to be at peak potential like some guys, I’m not really concerned with the length of his camp. I’ll agree that if he loses it could affect his confidence level at 185 but the chances of him losing vs Irvin (who is barely bigger than Franklin or even Lutter and a lot less skilled than either) are imho virtually nil.

  • Patrick says:

This screams [email protected], however we all get free MMA that we’ll either catch while it plays or catch later on… let’s be happy.

This could be a bad move on Anderson’s side if he takes this, Irvin is not a push over here and could definitely pull this out. I’m not sure Silva should rush into the 205 weight class like this so hastily.

  • Andy says:

I would like to believe this but the ufc cries wolf too may times.

If it happens I will watch both, but doesn’t spike replay those events a few times after airing live? I am really looking forward to see Fedor fight and would not miss it for the world.

  • Brandt says:

Ignore this UFC circus and watch Affliction. You can watch low quality (non-HD) commercial-ridden fights with an odd main event that was thrown together or watch some big name fighters in a new organization along with Fedor up against someone who isn’t a bona fide can.

In this case, free is worse.

  • HexRei says:

@#20 If only there were some solution wherein one could watch both shows!

  • brett says:

why not support A.Silva in his quest for world domination?

and dana…well played my friend…well played.

  • woooburn says:

well, i guessed half right. figured they’d put VERA in with irvin. if vera’s still on the card, what other 205’ers are available, that arent injured or already scheduled for fights? hamill? is bonnar on the mend? my other early inclination was thiago silva, but i doubt they’d wanna risk vera getting his ass handed to him. would be an entertaining fight though. there are rumblings of velasquez being on the card too, i believe.

regardless, silva on a free card, is enough to keep me from ordering the affliction card. can’t really afford it anyway. if they do another card, with some more even matchups, i’m sure i’ll bite.

  • Michaelthebox says:

Affliction: Thank you for your 15,000 PPV buys, Knowledgeable MMA Fans.

UFC: Thank you for your 500,000 PPV buys, Bleating Sheep.

  • bjjdenver says:

OK, so I’m assuming he is not vacating his MW title for this move, and only taking on additional fights??

imo, he will handle Thompson easily, but he won’t dominate the 205’s like he does the 185, though that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Where does this leave okami, the rumored next title shot at 185?

Hey, anyone still want to see franklin move back to 205 now?

  • bjjdenver says:

just read this will not effect the Okami fight, unless there is an injury, of course.

  • ultmma says:

from Roy Jones to James Irvin…..I’m not buying it. why the hell would anderson silva except this offer?

his first fight at 205 is against fringe top 20 fighter James Irvin……i’m not buying the source mma rated?

dont believe this rumor until its signed on the dotted line

its such a step back in competition it make no sense, unless UFC is paying him out the ass to fight on short notice

  • ultmma says:

well dave metlzer just confirmed it with DW on his blog….i stand by statement the UFC must be paying him a lot of money to take this fight

if james irvin wins i dont care what anyone says A Silva loses some of his luster

James Irvin maybe is a top 20 lhw

i’ll be DVR-ing it and hope Silva is dancing at the end of the night.

Franca vs. Edgar highlight the under card

  • Caleb Newby says:

Yeah, this is happening for sure.

  • hexdizzle says:

Hey everyone! its called a DVR or TIVO ….use one and watch both cards…
no need to fight over which card will be the best ..record and watch them both.
    Just a helpful tip… :)

  • I spoke with SpikeTV and they confirmed the fight as well.

  • Sam Cupitt says:

    Man…what’s the point?

Why would you risk your middleweight champion against a lower level light heavyweight in James Irvin? Why is Yushin Okami getting shat upon?

But anyway, hopefully Main Event picks this up for us down under.

  • Jim says:

    Hmm. Very interesting.

If nothing else, we’ll likely get to see how well Anderson takes a punch. I don’t think that Irvin will win, but I bet he’ll get a shot or two in before it’s all said and done. Wonder if Anderson takes him down for some BJJ? Interesting to see how this one goes down, and interesting to see how they fill out the rest of the card.

Add me to the camp of watching both. My DVR gets two feeds in simultaneously, so I’ll be recording both, flipping back and forth between both, watching whatever fight is more interesting at the time.

I hope both do really really well so that they get into some huge pissing match and keep putting up awesome cards on the same night against each other. That would be AWESOME.

  • Sergio G. Hernandez says:

“Add me to the camp of watching both. My DVR gets two feeds in simultaneously, so I’ll be recording both, flipping back and forth between both, watching whatever fight is more interesting at the time.”

Hear, hear. I love me my DeeVeeAre.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

    #9. Touche, sir. Well done.

  • Kogepan says:

Silva at LHW? Guess Silva couldn’t cut down to MW in one month.

    And James Irvin? Seriously?

Forget DVR, I’ll watch the brutal 30 second by Silva on youtube.

  • HexRei says:

    @#31 what a shocking idea!

seriously, you think this is a “tip”?

  • Zack with a ck says:

Sam Cupitt – I’m reading that Okami is still recovering from surgery.

Plus, let’s get off Okami’s boring nuts. He lost to Franklin, the 2nd or 3rd best MW in the world, and beat who…an ancient Tanner and Jason Macdonald? Why exactly does that give him a title shot?

  • Nate says:

well, the freebie card is looking nicer. I’ll still be watching Affliction. But now I’ll be watching the UFC fight afterwards.

  • Jackyl says:

Don’t forget. Anderson cuts to 185. So he probably walks around at about 200. Not much of a stretch for him to go ahead and fight at that weight. Who does he fight if he stays at MW? Okami and Bisping are the only two left. I’d like to see him fight Bisping but I would rather see him take on the best at 205. Liddell, Wanderlei, Shogun, Rampage. Those are superfights. He hasn’t just beat everyone he has faced at MW, he basically destroyed them. Stopped all of them in two rounds or less. Leben,Lutter,Franklin twice, Marquardt, and Henderson. Let him move on to greener pastures.

  • Zack with a ck says:

He’s going to fight at 185 and 205. He’s not vacating the MW title.

He walks around at 210 according to Big Nog.

  • #S Jizzle says:

i think this is excellent. i’ll watch both. i am interested in seeing who wins between Fedor vs. Sylvia (Q: remains if Fedor is the real deal or not?) and i am hoping Silva has a good camp despite it being short. i think Irwin maybe a bad match up. he isn’t as good a striker as Silva but Silva isn’t use to light heavy weight. i would be curious as to the weight he is at now. pumping iron to put on weight isn’t exactly the smartest. i hear kids say this all the time. start mma & they say they wanna put on 25lbs of muscle. the thing remains that a fighter is more agile, evasive, stronger, elusive, and better at one weight class where they are naturally at. i respect what Silva is doing. he should win but its not a give me. Silva could get caught. he has a good chin but its not meant to take punishment. if his reflexes are off or his body is not use too being at this weight class, he could get caught like Houston did in 3seconds. Silva has great head movement. i think this is Silva’s biggest test yet, bigger then Henderson. he’s moving up in weight, short period of time, risking all the marbles as he is considered to be unbeatable like Roy Jones Jr. back in the day. looking forward. i am picking Silva by early stoppage first round. Fedor by arm bar first round. i do believe we will see a shock in one of these fights though. i would prefer Fedor to lose instead of Silva. i think they’ll both win however, i think one will almost get caught or almost get subbed. something crazy will happen this night on the main event. looking forward.

  • double A-ron says:

anderson silva was a light heavy weight fighter before he came to ufc, so this should be no problem for him. Okami deserves a chance against him because he actually has a victory against him.( even though it was by a d.q.) Silva should be better at light heavyweight and after he gets a couple wins in he can avenge his loss against machida.

  • iceman says:

A silva has never fought machida as far as I know and btw try not to 4get irvins got 1 punch power in his hands and a solid chin, anderson could easily get caught(I don’t think he will but its mma and anything could happen)

  • Jimmy says:

The Affliction card looks pretty damn good…..minus the fact that it is mostly a bunch of old school ufc fighters…..and it costs $$$. I’ll probably watch it. But there is no way I’m gonna miss Anderson Silva. I just wish they were putting him against somebody with a more consistent record.

  • tallsforeverybody says:

DVR the Affliction fight and copy it to a DVD…by Christmas Affliction will be Chapter 11 and the DVD might be the only way to watch Fedor fight again.

It might also take that long to forget how boring Sylvia is and convince yourself to watch the fight again.

  • Nate says:

Affliction wins, even if my boy Anderson Silva is fighting. Sorry, but I’ll catch him after.

The Fedor force is too strong.

  • Derek Azevedo says:

Hey, listen if there is one thing I can say as a fan of MMA is that the UFC card that has been strung together, is a little weak, i’m still gonna watch it, but lets be realistic other then the main card the rest of the fighters are unknown’s which is fine and dandy. Anderson Silva might be making a mistake doing this, but who cares a fight’s a fight no need to overanalyse. As for the Affliction card I must admit it seems quite tempting to watch, but let’s be serious anyone expecting a war is for lack of a better word retarded, Sylvia stinks and Fedor is great, simple. Fedor will win this fight hands down Tim Sylvia is slow and huge and Fedor is tactical, and explosive, Instead of spending your hard earned money, I’ll tell you what is gonna happen; Tim is gonna run and sprawl ( just like he did against Couture) and Fedor is gonna shoot and get stuffed, in other words BORING, if you are gonna soend your cash at least you’ll see Nogueira and a couple other very good fighters, but I think I’ll stick to the UFC, it’s free for shit sakes and not only that but Silva is more entertaining to watch then Fedor (but he is real good). P.S> I still can’t believe Rampage lost….

  • Chris says:

Boring? Couture vs. Silva was a great fight, unless you were a Silva fan.

  • Oz says:

Historic! Andersen Silva will prove to every non-believers that he is the most dominating fighter there ever was and will be in the UFC. He will destroy Irvin and beat every light heavy weight contender in the division to become the LH Champ. Silva never under-estimate his opponents and has a second to non passion to destroy and win, no fighter currently has this menacing mentality! Beside the LH Division currently sucks, he will jolt it with life and excitement! It’s interesting and a true testament to Silva’s will how a lower weight champ has to fight a contender or two before a title shot, boxers (champs) can be promoted to fight higher or lower weight division champions. Dana is taking a risky route, gaining to lose what might well be his most valuable card (revenue generating). Luckily we are talking about Andersen Silva not the chump champ like Rampage who just gave up his title due to the lack of hunger! Chuck Liddell had this Hunger when he reign and now it will be Andersen Silva’s time to rule!!

  • jay bey says:

Anderson Silva is a pro, a real FIGHTER. He comes from the best camp in MMA. He has fought 205 before in Pride. Props to Silva for steppin up on behalf of Dana and the F.Brothers. Props to Silva for fighting for that money. Aye Dana I hope you cash him out $500,000 per fight. You should hire me as an advisor.

  • true mma fan says:

silva walks around at 225 so this could be a great fight but it’s also scary for him cause he has lost at 205 befor in pride and was tapped quick but i am looking forward to this fight

  • HexRei says:

@#53 Anderson Silva does not walk around at 225 right now. There is no way he’s cutting forty pounds every time he fights, lol. If he fought at 205 regularly still sure, but i doubt he could bulk back up to his old fighting weight this quickly. I’m betting we see an Anderson Silva that is basically just not having to cut weight.
