UFC officially announces UFC 88 in Atlanta; Liddell vs. Evans to headline

The UFC officially announced Monday afternoon that UFC 88 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 6 at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The promotion has also announced that a light heavyweight bout between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans will headline the event. The two had been scheduled to fight on June 7 in London at UFC 85 but the bout was postponed after Liddell sustained a severe hamstring injury while in training.

Tickets for the event will go on-sale to UFC Fight Club members this Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET. A second pre-sale will be held this Friday at 10 a.m. ET for those who subscribe to the UFC’s e-mail list. And the general public will be able to buy tickets starting this Saturday at noon ET.

  • Mike C. says:

Not very excited about this matchup. It was good for a last minute replacement but thats about all. This would be a huge win for Rashad but what does this do for Liddell? Chuck by tko round 2.

  • thomas says:

i agree, as a last minute replacement, this match was all you could hope for. But as a headlining match for a PPV 3 months away, its awful.

i dont see rashad coming out of this with a win. Liddell KO rd 1

there better be some amazing main card fights to save this weak headliner.

maybe anderson silva will be added later as a new headliner, he hasnt fought in awhile. would like to see him fight wanderei if he could cut down. now that would be a fight!

  • bjjdenver says:

I also agree. This just does not get me excited, especially as a ppv. However, Rashad does deserve a shot at a top fighter, whether you like him or not.

  • JoHn says:

i agree as a last minute replacement it was a decent opponent but now, no

  • Mike C. says:

#3, I agree Rashad needs a big name fight but this one doesn’t do it for me. Save Chuck for when Shogun is ready.

If Silva-Okami is added this will be just fine as a co-headliner.

  • mikee says:

Is anyone giving Rashad a chance in this one?? Hope not!

  • xx2000xx says:

I wish Shogun was fighting Chuck instead. This matchup does nothing for me.

  • ttt says:

    rashad to gas

  • Nate says:

come on, where is freaking Shogun?!?!!?!?!?

Chuck better not lose to Rashad, he sucks so badly. Cant they get anyone more exciting, Rashad is play-it-safe boring in the worst way. I saw a HL video of him online and the most entertaining part was the ring girls.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Is Rashad a better wrestler/grappler than Sobral? Liddell manhandled Sobral. If Sobral is a better grappler than Rashad, that suggests Rashad will have problems, too.

  • Rich S. says:

ya.. but.. the difference.. was that.. in those fights, sobral didn’t even try to grapple.. he had the best gameplan in the history of gameplans [total sarcasm] in striking w/ the best striking this organization has seen..

  • Rich S. says:

“w/ the best striking this organization has seen..”

    striker, not striking..

  • ak47 says:

Rashad deserves a top guy? Why? Because he drew with Tito Ortiz (only because of Tito grabbed the fence), or because he won a split decision over Michael Bisping? If Chuck wins, it will be a lopsided fight, and if he loses it will be boring (and possibly enraging) muck.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

I don’t know if Rashad’s game plan can be different from Sobral’s. It will be difficult for Rashad to shoot without throwing some strikes first, and as soon as he does that, he’s vulnerable to Liddell’s counters. Liddell has a pretty good sprawl, so even if Rashad closes the distance, it will be tough for him to take Chuck down. Tough match up for Rashad.

  • bjjdenver says:

#13, because like him or not, he is considered a top contender in the UFC. Putting him against mid-level competition proves nothing at this point. He has stepped up when the UFC asked him to and then Chuck got injured, so that gets him some points. Put him against a top contender and he either proves he belongs or shows that he doesn’t.

  • OCD says:

This is another example of Dana believing his own shit, i.e. that people will buy every UFC event just because it is UFC. That is a fight that belongs on an undercard, two matches before the main fight.

  • DPK says:

Franklin v Henderson would look good as a co-main event for this one. Before everyone bashes the card, can we at least wait another month to see what other fights end up on this card. I agree that Chuck v Evans isn’t a ideal main event, but lets see what else they come up with, it is still 3 months away.

I think Dana wants to see Rashad knocked out, so he doesn’t have to put him toward the top of the cards that he fights on. This also probably means, that Shogun isn’t going to be back before Nov/Dec time frame at the earliest.

  • Ranger says:

Umm this is tailor made for chuck, an average striker with a strong wrestling base.. I am a huge chuck fan and i would pay to see him fight any one but if chuck wins he will have his shot at the then champion forrest/rampage i think…! I believe this fight was made for chuck to win so the ufc golden boy gest another shot back at the title sad but true but don’t count rashad out he does have KNOCK out power and he can take a shot. I agree Shogun would be a bigger name but he’s coming off a loss where he got beat up for three rounds and then submitted with a few secs left by forrest who will get destroyed by rampage who lost to shogun the loop continues lol.. I am paying fuck it i am having a kegg party i just decided for UFC 88… Go Chuck this is set for a highlight reel for chuck but so was jardine HUmmmmmm is it worth watching hell yeah

  • king mah mah says:

Chuck better not take rashad lightly. I want to see chuck win, but I thought he would run through Jardine too! So I hope he has a better game plan than he did for Jardine. Not that rashad will be kicking the shit out of him like jardine, but he better not get taken down either.

  • king mah mah says:

You have to think too, Chuck is still competing at 38. Everyone he fights is conderably younger and he can still compete! I will definitely be buying this ppv.

  • king mah mah says:

    “considerably” sp.

  • Danny says:

i dont think rashad winning this fight is that far-fetched. chuck, coming off that hammy injury, may hesitate to sprawl as hard not wanting to re-injure himself. so rashad may want to keep that in mind and keep trying 4 the takedown

  • JOe K. says:

I think Rich Franklin is fighting Hendo. If that is confirmed I think that will be a way more exciting fight.

  • Patrick says:

It seems this isnt a well recieved matchup. And names like Wanderlei and Shogun keep getting thrown into the discussion. But you have to look at the facts. Chuck lost the belt, and then went 1-1 after that. And is trying to get back in the hunt for a title shot. Rashad is 6-0-1 in the UFC. This is a possible title shot matchup. With possibly Machida getting a shot before them. Wanderlei is going to need at least 1 win, and two for Shogun, and Dan Henderson (if he wants to fight in 205).

  • king mah mah says:

If Chuck loses I won’t buy another ppv with Rashad on it! LOL!

  • king mah mah says:

    We’ll have to boycott evans!

  • Jason says:

evans is not an exciting fighter. His fight highlights are as interesting as watching paint dry. he’s a b level fighter. Competing in an a game arena!!!
