Faber vs. Pulver smashes old WEC ratings mark

wec-logo.jpg If you’re a fan of free MMA, then we have more good ratings news for you.

According to World Extreme Cagefighting, it’s broadcast on VERSUS this past Saturday that featured Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver for the WEC featherweight title recorded a 1.4 household rating and averaged 1,535,705 viewers.

The WEC’s previous best on VERSUS was a 0.7. Yes, the WEC not only set a new record, they lapped the old one. According to industry insiders, the WEC and VERSUS were looking for a 1.0 so the rating they pulled Sunday night exceeded their expectations.

Also, it’s clear that all the marketing behind Faber is starting to resonate. Not only did he sell a lot of tickets, but Sunday’s show drew a 2.7 household rating in Faber’s hometown of Sacramento.

Don’t be surprised if VERSUS decides it wants to increase its position in the WEC by trying to get more live broadcasts. Right now the WEC doesn’t have the depth to run monthly, but I’ve talked to several top prospects that have engaged in recent discussions with the WEC and if signed, the promotion’s already impressive roster could become even stronger.

  • David says:

The WEC rocks!! They always put on a good show, with talented fighters with tons of heart.

  • Evan says:

Considering many people don’t have versus since its on a pay sports tier for most providers this is fairly amazing.

  • […] EliteXC pulling 6.12 million viewers is good for the sport or not, there’s no question that the WEC’s 1.4 rating was a positive thing. Overall, I don’t know how things could have gone better for them […]

  • Bad Monkey says:

That’s great. Considering the awsome fights put on by Faber/Pulver & Torres/Maeda I’m glad a lot of people tuned in. Those were two of the best MMA fights you will ever see, hands down. Really, all the fights shown were good, except for Rob McCullough’s. He should be embarrassed by that performance. ‘Razor’ Rob looked liked ‘Dull Butterknife’ Rob.

  • matt says:

I love the WEC cause those fighters fight to fight. No bullshit, no nothing. Every card I’ve seen has been great and the production is better than UFC. I really wish that was the CBS broadcast.

  • Zack says:

WEC would be perfect for ESPN. Pure sport.

  • matt says:

WEC would be perfect for any network. No President hyping, just good fights all the time. And they are creating stars the right way without hyping.

  • slimm says:

if the WEC were on fox it would show “casual fans” what MMA is all about unlike the what EliteXC showed (they did great numbers too, just think what the numbers would be if WEC34 was on cbs, nbc, abc or fox) sooo many people would be “turned on” to MMA it would be the best thing for this great sport imho, because we all know that the UFC is in the ppv business right, what a great time to be a fan of MMA
