Report: Gonzaga vs. McCully at UFC 86

According to MMAjunkie.com, a heavyweight clash between Gabriel Gonzaga and Justin McCully has been added to the card for UFC 86 on July 5 in Las Vegas.

McCully, a member of Tito Ortiz’s Team Punishment, has not fought since his successful debut at UFC Fight 9 in April of 2007. During that fight, McCully, who was added to the card as an injury replacement, recorded an upset unanimous decision over Antoni Hardonk.

McCully is currently undefeated in his last four fights but has not fought in over a year due to various injuries. He’s been rumored for several matchups over the past several months but nothing had been finalized.

Gonzaga is currently mired in a two-fight losing streak, having suffered back-to-back TKOs against Randy Couture at UFC 74 and Fabricio Werdum at UFC 80. He rose to national prominence following his upset TKO over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70 in April of 2007 after he knocked Cro Cop out with a head kick in the first round.

UFC 86 will take place at the MGM Grand and will feature a light heavyweight title defense by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson against Forrest Griffin.

Gonzaga has all the tools to be a great fighter. Great Grappling/BJJ and Muay Thai, but the second the fight doesn’t go his way, he breaks. The fact that McCully is a decent grappler himself, I’m hoping that Gonzaga atleast doesn’t get frustrated.

86 is shaping up to be a great card. The UFC is putting on great fights and it’s almost like comic books. You can’t miss a month cause then you’ll be behind on what happened and current rankings. That’s really MMA in general.

Nice way to get the Gonzaga train back on the tracks.

I am also hoping this gets GG going again, he has the skills, it’s just the mental part I’m a little worried about.

i’m willing to guaruntee that this goes to a verrrrry boring decision..

After GG/Kevin Jordan.. i can never like GG.. there’s no way.. that fight made me ashamed of being associated with MMA in any way..

  • JoHn says:

    well said rich

  • Andrej says:

So Rich? the same boring decision in Gonzaga/Carmelo Marrero or Gonzaga/Randy Couture? You can’t base one fighter’s career on one fight? that is just a sad way of looking at things.

  • Rich S. says:

    well..
i don’t base GG’s career off of that fight… because obviously he hasn’t had one like it sense.. he started winning in devistating fashion and then of course, the Cro-Cop headkick.. but.. i just don’t like him.. i can’t..

as for GG/McCully.. i think this will be a looong decision because of there styles.. McCully looked, to me, like an amped up lay’n’pray’r.. and we all saw GG totally gas in the Werdum fight.. sooo.. i suppose it depends on which GG shows up and which McCully shows up..
