Jason MacDonald was not happy with his level of competition at UFC 83 this past April but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to take issue with his reported opponent for UFC 87 on August 9, when he takes on rising middleweight star Demian Maia.
The news of a potential bout between MacDonald and Maia was broken by MMANews.com earlier this afternoon.
MacDonald defeated veteran Joe Doerksen via TKO (elbows) at 0:54 of round 2 at UFC 83 on April 19. It was a strong rebound for MacDonald, who had lost his previous bout to Yushin Okami at UFC 77 last October.
Maia was also victorious at UFC 83, improving his pro MMA record to a perfect 7-0 when his fight vs. Ed Herman was stopped due to a triangle choke at 2:27 of round 1. The standout competitive grappler is 2-0 in the UFC and he also holds notable non-UFC wins against the likes of Fabio Negao and Gustavo Machado.
UFC 87 will take place at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A heavyweight bout featuring Brock Lesnar taking on former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman and a lightweight bout pitting Roger Huerta vs. Kenny Florian have already been officially announced.
