Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to appear on “The Ultimate Fighter 8” as coaches

SpikeTV has announced that UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will serve as the coaches for the eighth installment of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality television series.

TUF 8 will feature lightweights and light heavyweights and will premiere on Wednesday, September 17, at 10:00 p.m. ET.

The release also confirms that Nogueira will defend his interim title vs. Mir on a yet-to-be determined pay-per-view event.

  • This is so ridiculous. There are about 14 reasons why this is wrong and I’m not thinking clearly enough to list them all individually.

  • ttt says:

looks like the UFC is at the stage where they’re sure they can’t make Randy return. i wonder if they’re gonna continue the ridiculousness and explicitly say Nogueira is “defending” the Interim belt. the winner of Vera and Werdum should be in line next, but now they’ll have to wait forever to fight.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Mir and ‘Nog are so laid back that I’m surprised they’re on the show at the same time. Where’s the drama of Tito/Shamrock or Hughes/Serra? TUF better hope for some livewires in the house.

  • brett says:

this is such a weak move.
nog has the personality of a wet paper bag.

and mir ….well…. mir is mir.

    im truly bummed about this

  • bigfish042 says:

Horrible..Now a year in between HW title fights. TUF ratings have been falling in the toilet. And the UFC idea to bring them up is to fuck up the title fight.

Before TUF, they was never a YEAR WAIT in a between a particular weight classes title fight. It has become the norm because TUF rating suck and THEY(UFC) will not realize it. So now the fans have to be punished and have to wait a year sometimes FOR ONE TITLE FIGHT in a divisoin.

ONLY 3 or 4 years ago, there was HALF the number of UC events PER YEAR compared to today……AND STILL THERE WERE MORE TITLE FIGHTS BACK THEN WHEN THERE WERE HALF THE EVENTS IN A YEAR AS COMPARED TO TODAY!!!!????!!!????!11 HORSESHIT!!!!!!

  • bigfish042 says:

    Sorry for the double post……

But I really hope that the ratigns for TUF are SO LOW, that TUF comes to an end. Then we wont have to wait a year plus for a WEAK HW title fight

  • Young Duby says:

This is absolutely ridiculous. How can Spike TV not be looking at this season’s numbers and see their formula is played out. Dana may be producing the #1 MMA event in town, but his acuemen inside the reality show arena is pathetic. There are a million ways to re-invent and improve upon the formula. Promises this season that “everything will change” lasted two episodes. Boo-shit.

I don’t mind Mir’s commenting for the WEC, in fact, he’s quite good. But when he’s talking about himself I want to shoot myself in the dick. I mean if you’re gonna stick with the same old formula, why not Mark Coleman and Brock Lesnar (yeah, the probably should be training and Lesnar’s personality ain’t too grand either). The only enigmatic character in the heavyweights that comes quickly to mind is Brandon Vera. And that ain’t great. Shit, I know, how about Dana White vrs. a tag-team of Randy Couture/Tito Ortiz. I’d watch that.

They needed to do away with the coach-vrs-coach concept and create a different one. Not one single soul, hardcore or not, is going to wach next season for Mir and Big Nog. God bless Big Nog but not one soul in the US will watch the full season, week-in and week-out, because he’s training a bunch of semi-scrubs.

Like Huckaby says, there’s a million things wrong with this. Primarily the fact that it appears next season will be little different than the seasons that have preceeded it. For a sport known for balls, as television creators and producers these folks are nutless wonders.

  • TomK says:

It’s a good thing they’re putting the Heavyweight title on hold — if Mir is their #1 contender, then who is next in line for a title shot? Vera who just lost his last fight? Werdum who is 1-1 in his last 2 fights? The UFC is almost completely devoid of any real #1 contenders. So while they figure out what’s up with Arlovski, or get a few quality wins out of who they have sitting around, it’s better to put the division on hold unless we’re looking for Nog/Herring 5.

  • Rashad #1 says:

TomK… I believe this news answered your question about whats happening with Arlovski. He is the legit #1 contender and if they are bypassing him you can safely assume he will be added to the July 19th Affliction card against Ben Rothwell

  • D says:

I agree with #7, the UFC HW division is on life support right now. But, my question is, why are they having another LW show!? The LW division is stacked right now!
Yes, the LHWs could always use some new blood, but HELLO, what about the HW division? Why not have LHWs and HWs? I mean they haven’t had HWs on TUF since TUF2!!!

  • Michaelthebox says:

There isn’t enough HW talent, D. There flat isn’t enough.

I can wander through Sherdog and find 16 LWs who are 10-1 or 15-3 in minor promotions without breaking a sweat. The top HW talent that isn’t in a major organization tends to be 2-0 or 4-1. Cain Velasquez just got a UFC invite with a 2-0 record.

  • whats gonna happen when nog and mir do fight? are they gonna throw a punch at the same time, bareley hit each other, pretend like they just got floored, then both fall to the ground at the same time and see who can win the fight with a brilliant display of indian leg wrestling? this show is just not doing it for me, sorry but that is how i feel, the whole house thing has a big brother/real world feel to it that i just dont like, and it used to be exciting when a fight was just announced and we were wet with anticipation about the rest of the card but the way things have went lately ill lose interest in this fight well before it even takes place.

  • Bofa Dees says:

BULLSHIT!!! I believe that I am going to be an Affliction fan… Sounds like they might be a real threat if the rumors are true.

  • D says:

“There isn’t enough HW talent, D. There flat isn’t enough.”

@ 10: I think Affliction would beg to differ 😉

  • Michaelthebox says:

Bofa Dees: the rumors about Affliction don’t say jack about whether or not they are real competition, because nothing indicates how they expect to make money on the event. Any idiot can sign Fedor, Sylvia, Arlovski, Alexs, Rothwell, Babalu, Barnett, and so on for an event. Making money on it is something else entirely.

  • Andrej says:

    ^^^ If Affliction survives?

  • #14 at this point i dont give a shit whether they make money or not , i want to see this card its not your money do you not want to see this happen even if it is a one time only event held by this promotion cause i cant wait. money isnt everthing just settle down in front of the tv for one night with abowl of popcorn ,weed ,,or a fith of crown royal and have a good time, if everybody would just be happy to see a show with this talent i think maybe they could pull off another one, then another and from then on ya never know, besides your dead wrong, dana is a tremendous idiot and he could not sighn fedor.

  • Michaelthebox says:

jason hughes, I was responding to the notion of Affliction being a threat. They aren’t a threat if they can’t make enough money to survive, no matter who they sign.

Dana would have had Fedor if he was an idiot. He’s not. Thats why the UFC is bashing every other organization’s brains in.

  • Jay says:

This sucks but at least it is the heavyweight division, it’s not like when they held up the welterweight title with tons of top caliber fighters readyfor a title shot, unless you think Kongo, Vera etc are worthy of one which I don’t really think they are personally. Plus what will happen if by some miracle Couture is actually forced to fight in the UFC then the actual title will not be held up just the “interim” then god knows what will happen dan will probbaly put couture and nog on as coaches for TUF 9 and make us wait all again.

  • paddiosf says:

I like the idea of Mir/Nogeuria as Coaches..First of all Courture isn’t coming back, it’s at the past of no return..Especailly with Afllicition having there own fight organization now…I think Vera/Werdum will fight the winner of Mir/Nogeuria fight..I might add also what happens when those trendy Affliction “Skulls & Bones Look is played out..that whole look is so played out..I ‘ve seen imitation’s at Target..Sorry guys..

  • #18 you are a mind reader huh? and answer the question do you want to see the card the way it is set up right now, yes or no?

  • DPK says:

They are doing LHW’s with the anticipation that these guys will drop down to Middleweight, and add some life to that division after the show. Look at the last time they did heavyweights, the winner Evans, and the next best guy on the show Jardine went to LHW anyway. The format of the show pretty means that guys are fighting on the show at one weight class above where they usually will end up fighting because they don’t have time to cut the weight, and keep it off over a period of time. If I were a lightweight I wouldn’t even want to be on this show, because with no UFC weight class to drop to, your going to end up fighting alot of bigger guys, or be over in WEC when the show is done.

It sucks that it will be so long between HW title fights, but it will give the division time to sort itself out, and identify a true top contender, wether it be Vera, Werdum, Kongo, Herring or if Arlovski comes back. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pick some winners from the Affliction card and bring them back into the mix as well.

  • Michaelthebox says:

Uh, jason hughes, what are you talking about? So far, I am not impressed by your performance.

  • Kelvin says:

[email protected] thinking Affliction is a legit contender as a org.

  • Zack says:

Affliction appears to be blowing their wad on the first card. Great for the fans, but how could it possibly last? Didn’t the Fertittas sink 200+ million in the UFC before it turned around? Does Affliction have that kind of backing?

  • michael the box….. answer the question do you want to see the affliction card the way it is set up as of right now yes or no . and to clear things up i think affliction is a major threat to every organization out there my opinion but at least i gave it.

  • Sam Cupitt says:

Now I’m weighing up which is worse.

Getting a shot at the interim UFC heavyweight title after knocking out Mike Kyle and then losing to Paul Buentello or getting a shot at the interim title after submitting a kickboxer with no takedown defense (i refuse to name him) and then submitting a 1-0 wrestler.

  • eazye says:

With all this hate on TUF coaches being champions, we must remember …

TUF 1: UFC LHW Champ Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell
TUF 2: UFC WW Champ Matt Hughes and UFC MW Champ Rich Franklin

The show started with champions and no one complained then about holding up titles. Rampage and Forrest each had injuries they were rehabbing so they weren’t gonna fight til this summer anyways. Nog and Mir probably could have fought in August or September but would the ppv really sell by just throwing them into the cage with no back story? This is a very unique way to showcase the champ and his contender on their road to their eventual fight.

  • Paul Hanna says:

well this just sounds like a waste of time.

lets hope for some stelar Light Heavys in there

  • mike wolfe says:

Lotsa angst about this announcement but I’ll bet that everybody who complained will also watch the show. Anybody who posts here is a complete MMA whore (myself included) who will watch the dregs of MMA because it’s still better than American Idol or Survivor.

  • bjjdenver says:

this pisses me off just enough to not watch TUF anymore. Damnitt!! I firmly believe in it being about the fighters and not the promotion/Dana/Shaw or whoever, but this really does irritate me. I know it isn’t delaying Nogs scheduled fight that long, but I just can’t help but think back to the Serra mess.

I just don’t like them holding up the belts for TUF. And does it really boost the ratings that much to have these guys coach?

Damn, they have such a long time between title fights as it is.

  • DPK says:

I think that TUF should take a few season’s off, and let the number of young hungry fighters who need a shot build up. Look at that first season, some pretty good fighters came out of it, Kos, Sanchez, Leben , Florian, Quarry, Griffin, Bonnar, and Swick. I remember reading a quote that essentially said that everyone in the house that season was there because they loved to fight, and wanted to get better and be the best. Now it seems like some of these guys just want 15 minutes of fame, and to be able to say they were on TV.

I thought Hughes and Franklin were great coaches, and they didn’t fight each other, but I enjoyed watching them.

  • Michaelthebox says:

Why would I answer that question? It has zero to do with whether or not affliction is a threat to the UFC.

  • Ronin says:

I might be the only one, I like this idea. Sure Nog looks and sounds like a bag of hammers hit his face, his story is very intriguing with his twin brother, thats he is only Pride and UFC HW champ.
I think it could work why not if Forrest and Rampage can’t lift TUF rating nothing can the style of the show has just gotten stale.

  • Scraper says:

First of all… Nog looks like a great coach… don’t know how Mir will do though.
Second… I’d read here in the newspaper that an Israeli fighter named Ido Pariente is on the show… he’s got a good record and is actually really good.
he’s a LW with lots of experience and a brown belt in JiuJitsu under Royler.

  • Donk says:

So is Mir getting the next shot? What about winner of werdum vs vera? This is a horrible idea, a poor tv show based around rookie inexperienced fighters holding up yet another title.

I agree with Ronin, if forrest and rampage can’t get good ratings, the big nog and Mir will do very poorly. Why is TUF such a big part of the UFC, why should it have so much power over the titles?

If the UFC wants to have coaches, then i think neither should be holding a title. It’s getting ridiculos how many title shots there are each year. The LW title has been in a bad spot for a while held up from July07 to Mid Jan08, the WW was on hold from July07 to April08, the LHW belt hasn’t been fought since UFC 75 last Sep, now the HW belt is going to be on hold too from Feb08 to possibly Oct/Nov08. That’s very poor from the ‘premier’ MMA organisation. The LHW belt will have been on hold for 11 months for Christs sake when R&F fight, and they havn’t been injured?????

It beggers belief how a program based around rookie fighters has to have such an impact on two fighters careers.

  • Patrick says:

Aren’t Mir and Nog like… actual coaches who control their own places? I mean, with all the naysaying around I’d like to throw out the positive that the training and the fights may actually provide more to the “hardcore” fan with these two coaches on it. Everyone bitches when TUF doesn’t focus on training/fighting, but when they get two coaches who may just be able to coach legitimately in all aspects of the game… everyone bitches?

Always sad how the majority of MMA fans are such whiney little babies. Get over it, enjoy yourselves.

  • yuushi says:

Well as much as I’d like to have Nogueira get some more exposure as I think he’s one of the most skilled fighters at any weight class (though I think this is more about getting Mir’s prettyboy face out there a bit more), does this definitively mean Arlovski is out of the UFC? I thoght he would be next in line for a title shot?

  • Red says:

How about the UFC using HW’s in TUF since the division could use some new blood.

  • matt says:

I think this is a great idea. The UFC heavyweight division is on life support. Werdum/Vera is for #1 contender. I think that Gonzaga/Herring is next for both of them. The winner of Herring/Gonzaga will face the loser of Werdum/Vera because if it’ll be for the next in line. Kongo was on his way but dropped the fight with Herring. The young talent just don’t have enough wins under their belt for a title fight. Mir has a backstory of former champ who didn’t ever lose his title. It also introduces Nog to the UFC audience, which is something they really need. This is probably the best thing to happen to the UFC.

  • Bofa Dees says:

I just want to clarify my comment #13. I’m not saying that I am dissing the UFC, but having to wait a year in between title fights is a bit ridiculous. Plus the heavyweight division needs CPR, but I don’t think that having another season of TUF heavyweights is the answer…. the winner of the last HW season is now a LHW and the runner up is a nomad! And for the record I never said I wasn’t going to be a UFC fan anymore!!!

  • will says:

I personally tend to agree with Matt (#40) on this issue. Everyone is saying the Heavyweight Division is dying and needs a shot in the arm. It’s true, it does. They’ve lost Randy and Sylvia and might be losing Arlovski. But the problem in my opinion isn’t a lack of talent. There is a lack of depth, but I think the top tier of the heavyweight division is pretty stacked. Big Nog is one of the most underrated fighters in the world. Frank Mir is a world class submission specialist and has a pretty impressive past that everyone seems to have forgotten about. Vera, Werdum, Kongo, Herring, Gonzaga and Lesnar are all quality contenders.

Having the title on hold sucks, but this might be the shot in the arm the heavyweight division needs. Make people give a damn about Nog/Mir because it could be an awesome fight and if people are actually watching these two heavyweight go at it, it could make people care about the title.

  • Derek B. says:

UFC needs to build up their heavy weight division. What a better way then to do a TUF based on heavyweights.

  • matt says:

Derek B(#43) the problem is that people who fight at heavyweight aren’t natural HWs, so they go on the show, and then drop down to LHW. Case in point, Keith Jardine is huge for LHW, but would be undersized at HW, so he dropped down. Rashad was way too small for HW so he too dropped down.

What the UFC needs to do is start getting Carwin, Velasquez, and Lesnar in the mix. Each should be fighting 3 times a year until they are legit contenders.

Kongo, Gonzaga, Werdum, Vera, Mir, and Herring are all vying for the top spot. If I was Joe Silva, I’d set it up like this.

    Mir/Nog for Title (happening)
    Werdum/Vera #1 contender
Herring/Sanchez (give herring a win or give Sanchez a legit win, he’d be riding a 3 fight win streak over 2 quality opponents and would have some steam, his only loss being to cro-cop)

  • Derek B. says:

that and I just read that they are doing light heavyweights and lightweights.

  • Marc S says:

Hold on,my twin 5 year old girls are whining about… Oh no, that’s u pansies! Get over it! So the HW div is void of good talent right now, it’s temporary, don’t get your panties in an uproar! But for the time being, with who they do have, who deserves a shot more than Mir? And if you all wish for low ratings on TUF, stop talking- I’m sorry, Whining about it, stop watching it and you’ll all be able to find something else to bitch about! For now, you could all bitch for the next day or e about this post! Sissy ass bitches!

  • michael the box, your a chicken shit who cant even answer one simple question if the card is this good someone will put the money up front ,.july is a while a way from now, so go back to your room wallpapered with ufc posters and ask yourself why you would not want to watch affliction banned, see answering a quetion is not as hard as dana tells you it is…………pussy.

  • ekan says:

aint nothing wrong with the leaders, antonio is a legend and frank mir is good too, think this can be good and that they train many good fighters
