WEC officially announces Faber vs. Pulver and Torres vs. Tapia for June 1

World Extreme Cagefighting officially announced Wednesday morning that WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (20-1) will defend his title against former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver (22-8-1) on Sunday, June 1st at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

The event will be available on VERSUS, starting at 9 p.m. ET. The announcement means that speculation that the fight would possibly be shown on pay-per-view is incorrect.

Also officially announced is WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres’ first title defense, to take place in a bout against Manny Tapia, 10-0-1. Torres, 33-1, won the title from Chase Beebe following a guillotine choke submission in the first round at WEC 32 on February 13.

Former NCAA amateur wrestling champion Mark Munoz, 3-0, will also make his WEC debut on the card, according to the press release issued by the promotion. The highly-touted Munoz will be moving from light heavyweight to middleweight for his bout. An opponent has yet to be named.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Hell yeah. I’ve been looking forward to this fight. Gotta give the edge to the Kid, but this should be a great contest.

  • Nolan says:

Awesome, Ive been a Pulver fan forever, I hope he can be the guy to finally stop Faber. He deserves some happiness after getting stomped by BJ.

  • Chuck says:

Can you freakin believe it …. Faber vs Pulver … this could go EITHER WAY.

Faber is a beast and Pulver hits hard !!!

This is a GREAT matchup … Faber will test Pulvers ground game as equally as Jens will test Urijah’s stand-up (assuming he can keep it standing)

WEC on a Sunday, thats interesting….. those are two scheduled matches
Lil Evil asked for Faber now he has the oppritunity to take his title, as much as i like Jens, this isnt Cub that he is fighting (which was an awesome 11seconds to watch), so Faber may just be that bad of a kid that he will re~tain his gold
Miguel is going to give Tapia his first defeat, Torres destroyed Chase and thats not too easy….. Rockk the mullet kid and keep that belt….
i dont live too far from Sac perhaps i will go i wouldnt mind execpt for the fact the last time Zuffa was there (sacramento), the fans were awful with their lack of knowledge and drunken booing, let alone they had to see Tito v Rashad in person ouch, ha, cheers

i like faber in this one

  • woooburn says:

would’ve liked to see pulver get one more win to build up his confidence (maybe against leonard garcia), before taking on faber, but i can see why they’re doing it. really wanna see pulver pull off the upset (?)

would be fun to see faber and torres fight each other, should they get through their fights. otherwise i’m not sure there will be much competition left for faber, aside from rematches.

  • Jeremy says:

Is Mike Swick moving down to the WEC? I just noticed him being listed in their welterweight fighter page, perhaps he is going to fight Carlos Condit next?

  • Sam Caplan says:

Mike Swick fought for the WEC before it was owned by Zuffa and before he had signed with the UFC. There are a lot of fighters still listed on the WEC site that are no longer with the organization (Brandon Vera is even listed).

To my knowledge, Swick is not going to the UFC. He is currently a free agent from what I’ve been told.

  • ctownhood says:

I don’t think there is anyone in the States that can compete with Faber, as this weightclass is not that prominent over here. I’d love to see The California Kid fight some of the top featherweights in the world (Kid Yamamoto, Akitoshi Tamura, Hiroyuki Takaya). Sam, maybe you have some insight on this…..I know the WEC is Zuffa owned, but are they opposed to co-promoting events?

  • Ram Maramba says:

ctown, they lent out Rani Yahya to fight Kid at a K-1 event, so they may do some trading.

Sam, Swick is a free agent? So Burkman was the last one on his contract?

  • […] sent out a completely unneccessary UFC83 hype email so they could also tack on an advertisement for the Faber vs Pulver mega-match that’s happening June 1st at the Arco Arena. Yup, that’s right: no more Hard Rock, […]
