The Fight Network has learned that TUF 4 runner-up, Patrick Cote (12-4, 3-4 UFC) will face Renzo Gracie protégé, Ricardo Almeida (9-2, 2-2 UFC) at UFC 86.
Cote’s training partner, former UFC middleweight contender, David Loiseau confirmed the bout.
The Canadian middleweight, known as the “Predator” is currently on a four fight win streak, with three of those four coming inside the Octagon. Cote’s latest performance was a first round TKO victory over the always dangerous, Drew McFedries at UFC Fight Night 12.
Almeida recently made his return to MMA competition at UFC 81 after nearly a four year hiatus from the sport. In his return bout he scored an acrobatic submission victory over UFC newcomer, Rob Yundt.
Personally, I like this fight very much. Cote has shown good hands in his recent bouts but that quick arm bar loss to Travis Lutter at the TUF 4 finale still lingers in my mind and Almeida should be able to test that part of his game. Almeida looked very impressive against Yundt but we only got to see his ground work. Cote should be able to provide enough defense, takedown wise, so that Almeida will at least have to engage with Cote before looking for the takedown.
This fight could very well put the winner in title contention or at least one fight away from title contention.
UFC 86 will take place on Saturday, July 5th in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a light-heavyweight title fight between UFC light-heavyweight champion, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and TUF 1 winner, Forrest Griffin.
