Report: Sakakibara preparing lawsuit against Fertittas

There are more details leaking out in regard to Pride FC Worldwide Holdings (a.k.a. Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, the majority owners of the UFC) filing a lawsuit in Clark County (Nevada) court last Friday against Dream Stage Entertainment, Dream Stage Holdings and DSE president Nobuyuki Sakakibara.

The Fertittas’ suit makes claims of being defrauded millions of dollars from the sale of Pride FC and Pride Bushido. So, what does that mean, you ask? Well, is one site that has delved into some specifics:

Dream Stage was supposed to go through a background check and drug testing to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements of the Fertittas’ gaming license in Nevada.

Operative words: GAMING LICENSE. I really don’t know how I can stress that enough. GAMING LICENSE.

It also looks like the situation could escalate further in short order, according to

A source close to DSE told on Tuesday that Sakakibara was preparing his own suit against the Fertittas for breach of contract stemming from the decision to shut Pride down last October.

Perhaps the UFC vs. PRIDE feud isn’t over after all?

You know, it seems like both sides in the deal are unhappy. Why not an even exchange? Zuffa gets their money back and DSE gets PRIDE back?

Or maybe they could do the whole bizzarro dream concept on bad TV shows where someone is shown waking up and everything that took place in the past three episodes suddenly never really happened?

  • Eric says:

Yeah, while noble I don’t think “do over” is a normal business concept.

  • Based on all the reports online, this is likely to get more ugly for both sides of that lawsuit.

  • Sam Caplan says:

Ivan, I know. Which kind of makes you wonder whether Zuffa should perhaps let this one go?

  • ufcfan says:

forgive me for being dumb here…

so the concern is that the fertitia’s have a gaming license???
it doesn’t surprise being a business based in nevada/las vegas.

  • Derek B. says:

I think they should just drop Pride and forget it even exists. But it’s kinda hard considering the situation that both parties are in.

If I were the UFC i’d try everything I could to get rid of Pride and focus on UFC and WEC.

Let the Japanese take care of Pride.

  • Eric says:

“Which kind of makes you wonder whether Zuffa should perhaps let this one go?”

Let it go? What was the amount they paid again? It was either $17 million or $70 million, something with a 7 in it. While Zuffa might have responsibility in knowing what they were buying it’s also a foreign business and if DSE misrepresented anything they have a right to try and reclaim more money than any of us will ever make in our lifetime.

  • “Which kind of makes you wonder whether Zuffa should perhaps let this one go?”

    I think they tried that.

  • Evan says:

Now does anyone know if Zuffa paid for everything in one lump payment or was it a series of payments?

I wonder if they are just suing to not have to pay anymore for whatever reasons.

  • bubbafat says:

It was 69 million. And, as far as I can make out, both Sakakibara and the Fertitta’s are crooks.
Sakakibara allowed his company to fall under the influence of organized crime(yakuza), and the Fertitta’s are reformed organized crime(daddy was a mobster).

  • bubbafat says:

everything I say is specualtion and heresay, and should not be taken as fact. It’s all in my head.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

Sounds like this could pertain to former Pride fighters and whether they could or did pass tests for substances like steroids.
