Report: McCully offered fight against Kongo at UFC 81

Loretta Hunt of The Fight Network is reporting that Team Punishment heavyweight Justin McCully has been offered an opportunity to fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 81 in Las Vegas on February 2.

According to Hunt, McCully has yet to accept or turn down the offer.

The UFC 81 card could be loaded with heavyweight bouts. In addition to a possible fight between McCully and Kongo, a match between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir has been announced and there’s growing speculation that Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira could compete for the vacant UFC heavyweight title.

  • Dizzle says:

no…because Kongo is a boring fighter just like McCully

  • Jay K. says:

    McCully by split decision.

  • Evan says:

right there with you Dizzle. His first fight in the UFC was awesome and it just went downhill from there.

some odd matchmaking announcements this week.

i woulda pegged them putting kongo up against someone bigger… especially with sylvia “calling him out” or whatever. especially after beating crocop. dont find him all that entertaining, but still.

  • Jeremy says:

This will probably go alot like his fight with Carmelo Marrero.

  • Andrej says:

I Like the match. Chiek Kongo need’s to be built up as a fighter. See if he can improve his wrestling and expierence in mma.

  • Dizzle says:

Kongo needs to finish this fight with a knockout to gain respect…it’s just as simple as that.

He hasn’t been able to finish his last 2 fights.

He couldn’t even finish cro cop after he broke his rib.

He’s just too tall and linky…he reminds me of a black version of semmy schilts.

  • Rashad #1 says:

Kongo is boring.. people rave about his standup.. what standup? never have been impressed by him and never will be.. how he beat cro cop is beyond me.. but then a lot of stuff that Cro Cop has done this year is beyond me

  • Dizzle says:

Rashad he beat Cro Cop by breaking his rib in the 2nd round.

Cro-Cop lost fair and square though.

I have never been impressed by kongo.

  • Adam Morgan says:

Kongo beat the piss out of Assuerio Silva whenever the fight was standing. He’s a good striker, he was really cautious and had a good gameplan in his last fight with CC.

  • MusicCityBeatdown says:

I recall CC taking a couple shots to the nut sack. No excuse but KC can’t finish. Fighter who finish make the dough. Fighters who can’t piss and moan.

  • Sam Cupitt says:

Kongo can’t finish? Christian Wellisch wakes up every morning with the taste of french knee in his mouth.

I don’t know where you guys got the idea Kongo is a boring fighter. None of his fights have been really boring except for Marrero and that fight was only boring because Kongo didn’t realise he needed wrestling in MMA and that’s all Carmelo had.

Kongo has great stand up and I think this is a smart matchup as it will show if Kongo has improved his wrestling and if he is ready to face up against someone like Nogueira or even Mir.

  • UFCPreview says:

I agree, Kongo is far from boring.

He throws a lot of strikes and puts together solid combos. He has KO power, in his hands and legs.

The guy is physically a BEAST….his only flaw is ZERO ground game.

Kongo’s striking is pretty damn strong for the heavyweight division, he stands a punchers s chance against anyone.

McCully may get takedowns at will, but he will eat some knees and uppercuts to get them

  • Dizzle says:

KONG = BORING FIGHTER WITH NO GROUND GAME!

    Plain and simple.

Like I stated he’s too tall to be efficient on the ground.

With no ground game…how is he able to finish a fight when 90% of fights end up on the ground anyways?

He will lose his next fight with an armbar 100% guaranteed!
