Where in the World is Rampage?

The UFC held a conference call yesterday to formally announce an interim welterweight title fight between Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre on Dec. 29 at UFC 79.

I have more on Hughes vs. St. Pierre on my blog.

Right now, I want to talk about Quinton “Rampage” Jackson because his name came up during the Hughes vs. St. Pierre conference call.

You know, the guy holds the UFC light heavyweight champion. Remember him?

I’m not the first blogger to bring this up but it’s kind of strange how little of a promotional push he’s received from the UFC. Chuck Liddell, and deservedly so, got a TON of press when he held the UFC light heavyweight strap.

if “big plans” means being a coach on TUF and postponing a title fight, we should all be very upset

  • MMA SKOOL ™ says:

Rampage would make a good tuf coach. He’s pretty good on camera. Rampage and Griffin would make a good fight. But agree with ttt, he needs to fight again soon especially with all the LHW waiting for a shot.

I like the Couture vs. Rampage rumor better, tho.

  • ossBASHA says:

Rampage is injured, that’s where he is.

“it’s kind of strange how little of a promotional push he’s received from the UFC.”

Could it be because he makes fun of mentally handicapped people? Or because he might get on his knees and hump a Japanese lady? Or because he continuously refers to himself as the “the ni**er UFC champ”?

  • Kelvin says:

Sam, the reason they are not hyping Rampage is simple…he’s not fighting on any of the upcoming cards…NOR is there a clear #1 contender to help hype him. IMO…the following needs to happen.

Forrest Griffin Vs. Keith Jardine 2…because Jardine KO’ed Griffin…Griffin subbed Shogun…then Jardine beat Liddell who is the former champ…the winner of that fight is the #1 contender…

Have Rampage fight the winner of that fight in March…then if he wins let him be a coach on TUF against the winner of Wandy/Liddell…then that sets up his next fight(whom will be Wandy hopefully).

  • Evan says:

Why would they be hyping him right now when they have a huge upcoming card that he isn’t on?

  • Dave says:

Well, last night Rampage was at Legends in Hollywood training with Chris Reilly. That’s about the most direct answer the question I can provide.

  • Anton K says:

Where does Machida fit into this picture?

  • The sherdog forums say he is injured and will be the next coach on TUF so you know that is the truth.

  • jt says:

Perhaps Juanito is protecting him a little bit from all the flash and glitz.

  • Johnny P says:

I asked the same question in a column at MMAOpinion a few weeks back. Thank you. I want more people searching/demanding Rampage, because this guy should be out doing mainstream promotion 3 days a week if his hand is still injured. Even if it’s not, he doesn’t have a fight. Get him out there generating interest (and self promoting in the long run).

  • Dizzle says:

Rampage is a great canidate for marketing. Dana White has big plans for him…but I’m not sure if making him a coach on TUF would really be that great. This past season has just been boring if you ask me. I think they need to get Rampage more active and do more promotions with him.

  • Evan says:

If the UFC promotes him too much people will complain. They can’t win.

  • Anton K says:

TUF has really devolved. The mystique of the first few seasons is gone. Now, it’s basically watch the idiots wreck the house and cry when they lose. There’s very little for the audience to connect to.

The first season was fresh because somehow the viewer actually CONNECTED to the fighters.
