5 Oz. T-Shirt Contest Now Open! Leave Your Entry Here!‘s t-shirt contest is now open!

This is your chance to play fantasy matchmaker for the UFC and possibly win a the brand new 5 Oz. t-shirt in the process.

As you know, a co-main event between Matt Serra and Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 79 on Dec. 29 has been canceled following a back injury sustain by Serra.

The UFC has announced that Hughes will fight Georges St. Pierre for the interim welterweight title as a replacement bout. However, we want to know what you think would have been the next best replacement in the event that GSP had not stepped up and accepted the bout on short notice.

Myself, Matt Cava, and Adam Morgan will all serve as judges and we will vote on the best fantasy matchmaker suggestion. If none of the nominations record at least two out of three votes, a fourth judge will be asked to rule on the three matches that each received an individual vote from the three-man panel.

Here are the rules:

– Match nominations go on a first come, first serve basis. For example, if Jack Johnson nominates Joe Smith vs. John Doe, Jack Johnson gets that match.

– The most important rule of all is that the match has to have a realistic possibility of being booked. We’re not going to recognize nominations that include fighters who have just fought, or are already slated to fight, or are injured and unable to compete. You can also use names not on the UFC roster, but they must not be contracted to another promotion. For example, Fedor vs. Randy Couture sounds great but that has no chance of happening on Dec. 29.

– A nomination of Hughes vs. Serra will not be valid.

– You get just one entry. Anything submitted after your first entry will not be valid and any match you mention outside of your first and only nomination can be used by another participant.

– All entries must be submitted in this thread. No entries via e-mail or in another post will be valid.

– While leaving commentary with your nomination is not mandatory please remember that a judging panel will be voting on the nominations. The more compelling your argument is, the better your chances of getting your nomination a vote.

– This contest will close at 10 a.m. ET on Friday. All entries submitted after that time will not be valid.

five-ounces-shirt-design.jpgI know the terms of this contest will make things hard, but that’s the idea! Do you really think we’d be giving away something as illustrious as a 5 Oz. t-shirt without making you put a little thought into things?

If you’ve already ordered a shirt, this is a chance for you to get a second one, on the house.

5 Oz. t-shirts are only available in medium, large, extra large, and double-extra large.

Just because you don’t win doesn’t mean you can’t sport a 5 Oz. t-shirt. You can get this badass shirt while also supporting this site by clicking here and ordering.

  • Big D D says:

Thiago Alves vs Hughes…Alves is the only guy to stop Lytle in some forty fights. He deserves his shot at the big time, only losses come from Spencer Fisher and Jon Fitch in his last ten and do you realize that he has been fighting in the Ufc since ’05? Give him a shot

  • Rich says:

I think that the GSP vs. Hughes is great but maybe they could move the Liddell/ Silva to the main event and with keeping the name Nemisis true, Koscheck vs. Sanchez 2. I don’t think that Hughes should have to fight and he could wait till Serra can fight. Why would Hughes want to fight GSP in a move that could knock him down out of a title shot if he loses.

  • Kevin says:

I think Hughes moving up to Middleweight for this replacement fight would have been very interesting. It wouldn’t have affected his status as the number 1 contender for the WW belt which he could have fought for when Serra came back from injury. Matt has previously said he would consider a fight with the MW champ down the road. This is why I think a fight with Travis Lutter would be very interesting. It would give Matt a fight at a heavier weight class with an opponent with a similar style as Serra.

  • Tom says:

Since it’s short notice I don’t know how possible it would be, but for the fun of it I’d love to Randy patch things up and have Dana sign Josh Barnett to give us Randy Couture v Josh Barnett.

Barnett has always claimed the belt is still his and it’d be interesting to see him in the cage against Randy.

  • RT says:

Arlovski vs Cro Cop is a fight that everyone would want to see and would almost certainly light the place up….

  • ttt says:

    Arlovski vs Aleks

  • Dizzle says:

    Fedor vs Cro Cop (Rematch)

    if that wont work then

    Shogun vs Rampage (Rematch)

What a fight that would be…fedor vs cro cop biggest dream rematch in history.

if that doesn’t work for the judges because it’s basically too fantasy then I pick Shogun Vs Rampage (Rematch) for the title. I think that would really put on a huge show for every MMA Fan out there.

  • jjdnb says:

GSP vs Hughes is a great match-up but if it wasn’t going to happen, I’d liked to see Hughes vs Koscheik. Even though Josh came of an embarrassing loss to GSP where he was out wrestled, I think he’ll come into the figh with something to prove.
When Hughes fought GSP it seemed that Hughes had given up wrestling and become a striker…well, he paid for that.
Hughes vs Koscheik would give both of them a chance to show the world what has brought them so much success in the wold of MMA, their dominant wrestling.
This is the second best fight the UFC could have lined up.

  • Evan says:

I know its a stretch but Gomi Vs Hughes.

  • Andrei Arlovski vs Cheick Kongo. Makes sense to me…both guys are coming off of A two fight win streak and both are great strikers who will stand and trade. This would be the perfect fight for the UFC to make Arlovski look as good and exciting as he once did.

    Potential problems:

    1. Arlovski has one fight left on contract.
    2. 5 weeks isn’t ideal notice for a big fight but works most likely in this situation
    3. Couture problem hasn’t been solved but either way you can still make this fight for a title shot.

They should get Arlovski resigned and have him and Cheick fight for a title shot. Cheick is coming of a pretty high profile win off of CroCop and Arlovski is still a big draw.

  • Jeremy says:

When losing a title fight on a card, in my opinion the only way to really replace it is with another title fight. That’s why the UFC did such a good job with the replacement, it still keeps the same meaningful fight on the card. Unfortunately for the UFC the rest of their title holders are seemingly already busy. Silva has Henderson in March, Couture is in his contract fight, Rampage is probably going to fight on Superbowl weekend(if the UFC is smart), and Penn is fighting Stevenson in England. So no one was left.

Unless you consider the WEC. Urijah Faber is their biggest attraction and is in arguably in his toughest fight with Jeff Curran. Why not use the Faber-Curran fight as a WEC showcase on the UFC PPV. It should be a very good fight and helps give the WEC great exposure. The WEC card would still be fine with 2 title fights and Jens Pulver-Cub Swanson fighting. I would think this would have been the best title fight the UFC could have put together considering everything else.

  • Richard says:

    Matt Hughes vs. Anderson Silva

Matt has mentioned the possibility in the past, so with the WW belt in limbo, and the MW division lacking any true challengers, how about a step-up for some revenge for Matt’s good buddy, Rich Franklin?

  • Arlovski vs. Brandon Vera – I think their respective striking would make for an interesting fight (especially since, apparently, Vera intends to stay at HW).

  • NickRE says:

How about Keith Jardine vs Shogun?
With two big light HW fights on the card already lets add this one and use this show to help sort out all of the talent in the 205 lb division I know Shogun is coming off a loss but he is still top 10 LHW and with Jardine win over Liddell he needs another big win before he can have a title shot so let the two fight and lets see whos a contender and whos a pretender.

  • Tom K says:

    Tito Ortiz vs. Keith Jardine

Both have big name appeal — a win by either could propel them into title contention. Jardine would have another big name on his list of wins (added to Liddell and Griffin). Tito would have a win over a big up-and-comer which might put him back in line for a shot against Rampage.

If we’re looking at needing to make up for the loss of the WW title fight, Tito is known to boost PPV buys — the hardcore fans may not like it as much, but the casual fans who watch TUF and know Tito would definitely make up for it.

Tito’s ability to talk (along with the potential mainstream coverage relating to his being on Trump’s TV show) make it something that could be hyped up quickly in less than a month.

  • Owen says:

    Matt Hughes vs Karo Parisyan

Karo can play into the the nemesis thing pretty well since that title shot was a long time coming. Plus karo going five rounds, maybe we can actually see karo stop somebody or get stopped.

  • phyteguru says:

Matt Hughes vs Jon Fitch. No doubt about it. Fitch 7-0 in UFC and hasn’t lost since being KO’d by Wilson Gouveia. Hughes, also a wrestler has won 7 out of his last 8.

I’m happy with the Hughes GSP matchup, but I was HOPING for Hughes Fitch. Alves would have come in 3rd and then Karo. If Karo hadn’t lost to Diego, he’d be up there.

  • Rashad #1 says:

Since Hughes has expressed an interest in fighting for the 185lb Belt why not have him fight Franklin? Seeing as Franklin is undoubtedly nothing more hten a gatekeeper for Silva then it would maek sense to have Hughes fight Franklin and if he wins setting up a title match between hughes and Hendo/Silva.

  • defsteve says:

    Forrest Griffin vs Quinton Jackson.

Title fight to replace title fight. Neither fighter is confirmed for any future event. Both last fought in September.

  • Brad says:

    Matt Hughes vs Rickson Gracie

Have Rickson Gracie avenge his brother Royce’s loss to Matt Hughes at a catch-weight of 175 or 180 lbs. Rickson has openly stated he would like to fight again, and this would be a terrific platform for him to solidify his place in MMA history in front of a huge audience. By defeating Hughes, he would almost completely remove the “myth” status usually associated with his name and also get his name added to the American MMA market.

  • Jordan Breen says:

    Matt Hughes vs. Danny Lafever.

    /contest over.

  • I say Matt Hughes vs. Mike Swick. I would imagine Swick would jump at the chance. While he hasn’t proven himself at WW, he had fought some good guys in MW, and was obviously named “Quick” for a reason! I think it would be an exciting match up for everyone. The fans know him, because of some of his bigger fights like Joe Riggs on PPV, etc. We get to see what Mike Swick is made of at WW, and Matt Hughes gets his fight. Winner gets Serra for the “Undisputed” title!

  • Dizzle says:

no contest was over when Brad posted

    Matt Hughes vs. Rickson Gracie

I would pay to watch that fight…If i had a chance to vote Brad you would get my vote no doubt! Great pick man!

  • Dizzle says:

    Screech vs AC Slater!

  • jaydog says:

Brock Lesnar vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

This card is lacking in talented lumbering giants. To save the day, and deliver PPV-buy inspiring star-power, Brock Lesnar should step up and test his cage prowess against a ranked fighter. I would have suggested a more plausable match-up like the currently scheduled bout with Frank Mir, but I don’t think it would turn enough heads to fill the void. This match fits because neither have fought in a while, fight fans are eager to see each of them, and it’s a pretty intriguing match-up. Brawn vs. finesse, MMA experience vs. performance-art-player, and wrestling vs. jiu-jitsu. Of course, Nogueira’s chin means this fight goes a couple rounds, assuming Brock has some submission defense. Also, Randy won’t be going up against Nogueira anytime soon, so give him a big money match-up in the meantime.

  • Joe Rogan vs. Wesley Snipes….no brainer.

  • bigfish042 says:

Plain and simple…..Matt hughes, as well as GSP were PROMISED title shots. Therefore I would bring in Karo Parisyan vs Jon Fitch. The welterweight divison has many contenders that need to be reduced to a(ONE) top contender.

Hughes vs. Serra on hold for another month or 2. We already waited 8 months. So why not a little longer. Then that winner faces GSP. The Fitch vs Parisyan fight would declare a number 1 contender for the ww title

  • bigfish042 says:

    POST 26(CON”T)

Karo was promised a title shot tha he never received. This is his time to redeem himself. Thiago Alves simply needs another win or two, especially against a top fighter in the ww. The time is NOW for both Fitch and Karo. Fitch was worried about weight issues, etc, etc. Just ask Karo what can happen if he doesnt jump all over this. Karo vs Fitch makes perfect sense for a replacement for UFC 79

  • Adam Morgan says:

Danny Lafever v. Benji Radach II: Who Stole My Girl This Time

  • Gavin says:

Dana White vs. Matt “bitch-slapped” Walker

  • Schlegel says:

Guys I just recieved my T-shirt in the mail and I wanted to let everyone know they ROCK, definitely a quality addition to the wardrobe. I’m glad you didn’t cheap out and go with those thin, flimsy T-shirts that some other sites offer. Good stuff, so when can I get my 5 Oz Hoodie? Thanks!

  • Dizzle says:

hell yea a hoodie…that would be extra tight.

  • Phyter says:

Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves II

I believe Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves II would be a good fight “IF” Hughes opted out because it was an interim belt match. If Fitch and Alves were to fight it would solidify the welterweight title contention more and would leave open a possible fight between Hughes and GSP in early 08 and the winner of that fight would fight the winner of Fitch/Alves for a title shot.

  • Drewdoodoo says:

Sam Caplan vs. Paul Clifton. Not sure if either are under contract with other organizations. Beat his ass Sam!

  • bigfish042 says:

    2nd choice

    Arlovski vs Cro Cop

The UFC needs to sign AA to a deal. Assume that another key welterweright match up is not possible at this time. BOTH Arlovski and especially Cro Cop need to prove themselves as worthy contenders in the HW division

Both need a win to earn the respect of the fans, as well as UFC managment. AA needs to show that he can STILL “bring it” and have an exciting showing. While Cro Cop desperately needs to prove all the naysayers wrong and that he IS NOT washed up and can still KTFO of people! Therefore I bring in AA to face Cro Cop!!

  • NickRE says:

Here’s another vote for a 5oz hoody. Also does 5oz sponsor any fighters? If so, who? If not, why and would they consider it? Just curious.

  • bigfish042 says:

Damn AA vs Cro Cop was taken. I should of looked more closely.

Therefore my second choice woudl be Arlovski vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira(Big Nog). Big Nog didnt impress me at all against Herring. He looked out of shape and against any other HW contender I think he would of lost.

I think that big Nog DOES NOT deserve an immediate title shot. He needs to prove himself as well. See POST 33 for reasoning on Arlovski in thiws fight AA vs. Big Nog makes sense. Winner is the number 1 contender.

    THEREFORE…….my second choice
Andre Arlovski vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira(Big Nog)

  • Big Steele says:

I vote for Franklin vs Hughes at middleweight.
2 aging UFC future HOFs that have had some troubles in their last few fights. This might give Franklin a shot in the arm and life to the MW division again.

  • Sam Caplan says:

Sponsoring fighters is something Matt Cava and I have talked about. There are editorial concerns because some feel it might influence our objectivity. The concerns are valid but we generally try to be supportive of the sport and the fighters, especially fighters trying to make their way to the big time.

To me, it wouldn’t affect our coverage because in order for us to want to sponsor a fighter, it would mean we already thinking highly of him.

The biggest issue is money in that we don’t have any right now. We can support fighters through exposure and support but that’s the only way we can help them for the time being.

Technically, Five Ounces Of Pain does support one fighter. My wife competes in amateur Muay Thai and grappling tournaments. She will be competing in two grappling tournaments this month and will be wearing a 5 Oz. patch on her Gi.

  • Sam Caplan says:

In regard to hoodies, that’s also been discussed. Right now we need to sell out of the t-shirts before we can even think about launching another product.

  • Sam Caplan says:

Drew, I’d beat that guy like he owed me money!

Oh wait, he actually does owe me money.

  • NickRE says:

Thanks for taking the time to respond Sam. Love the site keep up the good work.

  • Tony says:

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Mauricio Rua

  • Drewdoodoo says:

Yep, my money would be on Sam “Bitch Better Have My Money” Caplan.

  • jaydog says:

5 OZ: Can you clarify whether you wanted a welterweight match-up for this contest or if it was supposed to involve Hughes? Can it be a fighter who’s already scheduled to fight? I’ve already weighed in, but I wasn’t sure if my suggestion fell within the parameters. Does the “likelihood” figure in, or is it an “if we ran the UFC” kinda thing? NYE is an opportunity for fantasy match-ups and I think you need a sensational element (like Lesnar) to bring in casual fans.

Personally, I think both Big Nog and Lesnar would stand to gain from fighting each other on NYE. The exposure would be tremendous and no one could really be blamed for losing. It would look like one of those classic Pride mis-matches (a la Bob Sapp or Schilt), where it isn’t really a mis-match if you know the ability of the smaller man. Of course, Dana has very different plans for both fighters. My suggestion is simply an improvement on the current UFC gameplan (IMHO). Cheers.

  • Sam Caplan says:

Jay, it doesn’t have to be a welterweight match and it doesn’t have to involve Hughes. It just has to have a realistic shot at happening.

  • MoreThanUFC says:

No joke, Jason Chambers vs Hughes. What more could you ask for. Instant appeal, JC in not under contract, doesnt have any upcoming fights, tons of exposure, BIG NAME, etc, etc. It would market itself.

  • Drewdoodoo says:

MoreThanUFC, but then Jason Chambers would be dead. Do you want that on your conscience?

  • Ryan Seacrest says:

    David Hasselhoff vs. Lindsay Lohan

  • Sam “Five Ounces” Caplan vs Ryan “Fightlinker” Harkness

This would be for the Blogger belt, which Fightlinker currently keeps next to his computer and wears whenever he’s busy being the best blogger in the bloggoverse. Sure, it would have to be done at a catch weight because of short notice, but I think we could work something out.

  • Sam Caplan says:

If Joe Silva made that match would you still have a problem with his matchmaking… or would you have an even bigger problem?

If you’re serious, then I’m serious. Is there a promoter out there interested in making a potential match between Fightlinker and I happen?

  • Dizzle says:

Sam what weight class are you? Dood if this happens this will be the biggest thing that has ever hit the blog sites! Dood and if it does happen…does get the free t-shirt?

  • Sam Caplan says:

Derek, I’d be most competitive at 170 lbs. However, I’m pretty out of shape right now so I would need six months to get in range to where I could cut to that target. Plus, I doubt Ryan wants to go down to that weight.

I can do 185 lbs. I’d could probably get to that in two weeks but I’d want to get down to that weight the right way and I’d need at least three months of full training before I took any kind of fight.

If FightLinker beats me he will win a lifetime supply of 5 Oz. t-shirts.

  • drdanders says:

Jardine vs Griffin 2…theyre both coming off Huge wins. Evans just fought, Rua just had surgery. The rematch would take place almost exactly 1 yr after their first fight. Depending on how Wandy does against Chuck, Jardine vs Griffin could very well legitimize the true #1 contender at LHW

  • […] Ryan officially issued a challenge to me of sorts in the t-shirt contest thread. But he doesn’t want my eyebrows — he wants my […]

  • Jack Morris says:

I personally would have loved to have seen Andrei Arlovski vs Mirko “Cro-Cop” Flipovic

They are both great strikers, they both have left something to be desired in their last fights and need an impressive fight to get back in the good graces of the UFC and the fans. Both were great and seemed to have slipped recently. It would be a great make or break fight and I know it would be an exciting watch.

  • garth says:

I know it’s been said repeatedly, but Jon Fitch vs. Matt Hughes would have everything, and be an awesome display of grappling. Everything would be on the line for both fighters: Hughes, his legacy. Fitch, his future… a world class hall of fame champ vs. a world-class up and comer prospect who’s destroyed everyone in his way.
I’d definitely vote for that fight. Especially since Karo already fought.

  • Sam Caplan says:

  • Rob says:

    Gabe Gonzaga vs. Josh Barnett

The casual fan (including myself) doesn’t know enough about Gonzaga, only that he “highlight reeled” Cro Cop and was soundly beaten by Captain America (broken nose or not). Barnett had gone on the record saying he stills feels the HW title belongs to him and has discounted the skills of UFC heavyweight contenders i.e. Gonzaga.

I say let’s see if Gonzaga is the future of the heavyweight division. Although I don’t really care for Barnett, let’s face it; he’s slick on the ground, experiened and would add depth the a division that is lost without The Natural.

I would also like to see Frank Mir vs. Gonzaga for a similar fight stylistically.

  • Ryder Die says:

    Dennis Halman vs. Matt Hughes

After his suspension Halman would be a great fit to fight Hughes. I know – it sounds far fetched but give it a chance. Hughes has had major trouble against Halman. Halman would take this fight seriously and train hard. I know he is an unknown to many casual fans but with a little background and a lot of publicity this could be a major draw. I think it would get better ratings than Validation. Thanks ——
