Strikeforce to Sign TV Deal

Sources have confirmed that Strikeforce is very close to inking its first major television contract. The exact channel is not known at this time, but Strikeforce believes coverage will be starting within a few months.

With a TV deal, Strikeforce has a chance to become a major player in the mixed martial arts world. They already hold the record for the largest indoor MMA crowd in the United States by putting over 19,000 people at the HP Pavillion in San Jose for Frank Shamrock’s win over Cesar Gracie. That event took place on March 10, 2006.

With a roster that includes Shamrock and the newly signed Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Strikeforce is making major strides towards becoming the number two promotion in the country. They also have top-notch lightweights Gilbert Melendez and Josh “The Punk” Thomson under contract.

let’s hope it’s on a basic cable station and not some ridiculous sometimes-available channel, or a high-nineties channel like Ion.

  • I agree.. even more importantly, I hope they air live fights. Live fights have been one of the keys to both WEC and Elite XC’s success. Not showing live fights has really hurt both the IFL and Bodog Fight.

A deal that’s a LIVE format on a strong station isn’t likely simply because no one has heard about any more channels being interested. I hope the same thing, but if it was such a sweet deal, wouldn’t we have heard separately of a major cable outlet being interested in getting aboard? Live fights cost money. I wish cable networks were so willing. Versus is probably losing money on there WEC deal, and I’d think they look at it as something of a loss leader.

Also, if a deal does go through, I wonder how this effects Strikeforce and Elite XC relations. I’m guessing it seriously complicates them, and Frank Shamrock would be short term in the middle.

Thats great news. Scott Coker is 1st class promoter

  • Hey, I hear HBO is looking for a promotion that’s not run by an egomaniac control freak …

  • Sam Caplan says:

Strikeforce’s deal won’t be with HBO. Although, that’s a good idea.
