Gilbert Melendez to fight for Strikeforce

Former Pride lightweight title contender Gilbert Melendez will be returning to his roots when he fights for the Strikeforce promotion on September 29 in Beverly Hills, Calif. at the Playboy Mansion.

Yes, you read that right: the Playboy Mansion. MMA and an abundance of fake breasts is a brilliant combination. Scott Coker is a genius. There’s going to be a ton of celebs there and media requests from all over.

Melendez, who is undefeated, became a free agent not too long after Dream Stage Entertainment sold Pride to Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. He announced in June in an interview for that he was officially free to negotiate with other organizations. However, has learned that Melendez has not signed a new deal with Strikeforce, but will be fighting under the terms of an existing deal that has been signed since last April.

Regardless, it’s good news knowing that one of the most gifted lightweights in the world is going to start fighting again.

Strikeforce has also announced that Josh Thomson, Bobby Southworth, and Daniel Puder will be fighting on the 10-fight card.

I’ll have more details as they become available.

It will be interesting to see whether or not this is one of the shows included in the Strikeforce/EliteXC/Showtime deal stemming from the Strikeforce/EliteXC/Showtime lawsuit settlement. I certainly hope it’s on Showtime as opposed to not being available for anyone but the live crowd.

I agree Ivan, I believe this will be on Showtime as it is a great PR opportunity. Props to them for signing Melendez.

It definitely should be on TV. In reading the press release, it’s a total cool concept because they will be having gourmet food, top shelf bar, a wine tasting, and an invite-only poker game. It’s a pretty cool concept and would make for a great visual on TV. I realize Bodog has tried to do something like this already but we’re talking Playboy here.

Melendez wanted to fight for the UFC immediately but Strikeforce wouldn’t let him while still under contract. No worries; Gilbert said last week that once he finished w/ Strikeforce(1 fight I think), he’ll join up w/ the UFC most likely.
